Remember that time Tiger Woods was in contention at the British Open, stumbled a little on the front nine and decided to walk off the golf course because Elin wanted to grab lunch?Oh, you don't? That's probably because Tony Romo is the only famous athlete with a whip wrapped around his, well, you know.
Tony Romo, a native of Burlington, Wis., was home visiting family and decided to join his father, Ramiro, in the Ray Fischer 72-hole Amateur Championship at Riverside Golf Course in Janesville, an event run by the Wisconsin Public Links Association. So you're playing golf with your dad, who is probably so happy he's staring down at those poor souls on cloud nine, and you just jet on him to pick up your girlfriend, when the relationship has always been a bit stubbly, to take her to the airport? Not to get all SNL on you, but really? You're the Dallas Cowboy quarterback and she's made such blockbuster hits as "Blonde Ambition" and you can't afford a rental service? The Dallas Cowboys' quarterback, a two handicapper, started well, shooting 69 and 70, five under par, and was tied for third (in a 172-man field) after Saturday's second round. He shot a 74 in the third round on Sunday morning and was fading on the front side of the final 18 when he withdrew and left in a hurry. The reason? He had to get girlfriend Jessica Simpson to the airport.
I have a few rules with sports and relationships, and a big one is if you've committed to an event, whether it's a softball tournament, round of golf or even a keg stand competition, you never leave your buddies while they're holding your feet in the air.
Update: Believe what you want, but according to the DMN Cowboys blog, the reason Romo left is because of "informal workouts." Umm, OK.

Romo left the tourney to get back to Dallas for OTA's.
Try again, Shane.

Couldn't just admit you were wrong, eh Shane?
The Jessica and Tony Story is a non-story. Stop falling back on easy material and write something that people give a crap about.

My question is then if he left for OTA's, why did he commit to the event if he knew he had to fly out so close to it? I am not doubting it because I have no proof either way, just asking that don't you think he would have had advance notice from the team that his presence was wanted back in Big D?

Well, Chuck...
Maybe he played just to spend some time with his dad - lotsa guys do that - and maybe, just maybe the guy prioritized being at work over his hobby?

As a Cowboys fan, I already knew since last week that Romo got some last minute calls from Valley Ranch that he had to cut his weekend short to fly back to Dallas. People like YOU, are always quick to jump the gun. NEXT TIME PLS REFRAIN FROM WRITING CATTY REMARKS BEFORE MAKING SOME RESEARCH OR AT LEAST USE A MORE CREDIBLE SOURCE OF INFO!!!

OK, so Romo supposedly got last minute phone calls to return to Dallas. But, he had committed to play in the tournament - the ENTIRE TOURNAMENT! Shouldn't that FACT matter?
Romo could not have waited perhaps 2 more hours in which time he could have completed his round and honored his commitment? Don't the Cowboy's have schedulers and coordinators to avoid "conflicts" of this sort that affect other events and people?
Somehow, I think those who PAID to watch him play might have walked away a wee bit disappointed. Romo and the Cowboy's MADE a choice between honoring their word or not. You can try to rationalize the reasons, but pure and simple, they gave away a bit of their integrity with their choice.
Perhaps "America's Team" should mandate a course on Business Ethics...what a concept, or in the Cowboy's world, perhaps an oxymoron....

even that cowboysblog link alludes to the fact that he left prior to concluding the tournament in these words: "Would he have bolted if he was in contention for the title" - makes you wonder, eh? I agree that those final 2 hours would have made a world of difference to his dad and not a heck of a lot of difference in his travel time. My son played golf, baseball, and tennis, and I would have been more disappointed if he quit a game than if he lost that game.
