David Duval Comes Out of Nowhere to Fire a 73 at British Open

I have to say, when I saw this photo, it took me a few seconds to recognize David Duval. He's, shall we say, put on a few and looks more like the guy who fired a 59 in 1997 than the svelte Tiger-chaser in the early 2000s. No matter, Duval, who has spent the better part of six years focusing on things outside of golf, is currently in the clubhouse after firing an opening round 73. That's good for T-3.

Not too shabby for a guy currently ranked one millionth on the money list. The thing is, he told Ian Baker-Finch earlier this week that he's swinging the club as well as ever, and thinks more about winning events than just making the cut (he should recommend his shrink to Phil Mickelson). Well, in some pretty horrific conditions, Duval's nifty 3-over could be the story of the day.

In other, less surprising news, John Daly signed for an 80. But on the upside, when you factor in his handicap, he's currently the leader by five shots over Retief Goosen. So there's that.

A lot's sure to happen between now and Sunday (hell, between now and tomorrow), but imagine if Duval wins this thing. (Long shot, yes, but bear with me.) He's suddenly in the running for PGA Player of the Year, right? Sure, the Open Championship isn't part of the PGA Tour, but there's no way Kenny Perry wins it over Duval without even participating in a major. Wait, what? Tiger Woods?
