For most golf fans, the 2008 PGA Tour season ended with last month's Tour Championship. (Or, more realistically, the Ryder Cup since the FedEx Cup is basically the unofficial start to the silly season.) Which means that there's not much to talk about until January's Mercedes Championship, or until Tiger Woods decides to tee it up again. That was the case until about an hour ago, anyway. Thanks to alert FanHouse reader Heather we've learned that John Daly, the Joe Six-Pack of professional sports, has been cuffed, stuffed, poured into an orange jumpsuit and detained.
According to News-Record.com, Daly was held in custody Sunday after police said he was drunk off his arse in a Winston-Salem, NC restaurant. And as if it needs clarification, yeah, it was a Hooters. (Inveterate FanHouse blogger, Winston-Salem-area local, and Hooters regular Will Brinson somehow wasn't on the scene.)
Police officers were called at 2:17 a.m. to the Hooters at 120 Hanes Square Circle on a medical call. When officers arrived, Daly, who had earlier lost consciousness, was being treated by EMS.If this weren't so depressing it would be hilarious. But Daly is 42 years old, not 21, and he has a long history of substance abuse, often played out in public.
Daly "appeared extremely intoxicated and uncooperative," police stated in a news release. Daly repeatedly refused to be escorted to the hospital and was eventually asked to leave the restaurant by workers there.
Daly spent the night in the can to sober up and was later released. No idea where he goes from here; he's still without his PGA Tour card and he's mentioned playing on the European Tour in 2009. I could climb up on my soapbox and give my "you're going to drink yourself to death" speech, but I'm pretty sure Big John's heard that one a time or 50.
Of course, if the professional golf thing does eventually fall through (which optimistically assumes it already hasn't), there's always the circus. It's good to have a fallback plan, I suppose.

Unfortunately Mr. Daly has yet to hit that bottom.....if his friends & family would 'let go' he may stand a chance of recovery. One must "pick up the tab" for their choices & suffer the consequences, often time & time again, for their BAD choices, before he'll ever learn. Why do anything different if someones always bailing you out of your problems? He is surrounded by people who love him, but often times they are the ones who enable....tough love, let go & let God, all these things do work. I know from experience with family & loved ones. "When nothing changes, nothing changes". Nuff said. He's in my prayers.

"Shut up Bible thumper"......what a boneheaded remark that was....I think Robin spends too much time in the Bat cave. Another "Robin" you say? Well, then that explains the birdbrained comment.
To the rest of you who can complete a coherent thought, Daly needs to hit rock bottom. He's obviously a hardcore drinker and despite being publicly embarrassed on several occasions relating to his drinking, he still hits the bottle....in public places no less. He won't get help until he has lost everything, and I'm sorry but God isn't going to intervene. God dumped us on this planet and said "Hey.....here's free will...do with it as you please, good or bad, the only requirement is you have a meeting with me when it's all over".
No one can help an alcoholic no matter how much they try and how good the intentions. If a person doesn't want it for themselves, they'll never stop until their liver does.

Professional golf should dump Daly ASAP. He is a loser who refuses to address his drinking problem despite being given many chances to do so.

John is a sick man. One of many with this sickness. The PGA can help by refusing to take part in his self abuse and not allow him the priviledge of playing until he has serious recovery under his belt.

Its clear that John is bipolar. The tragedy is that it appears there is either noone around to insist he take the meds necessary to get his life back or he is refusing to listen. The media either glorify obvious bipolar sufferrers like Heath Ledger(undiagnosed, but clearly bipolar) or they laugh and make fun of them and stalk them like Brittney Spears and John Daly. Its a very serious and deadly illness and if there is anyone who works in the alcohol business, be it waitress, bartender or liquor store owner they ought to refuse to serve him and tell him to get to a doctor. Drinking is like pouring fuel on a simmering fire when you are bipolar.

Well Jeannie Wagner,
You stated in print that John Daly is bipolar. Later in your spiel you stated it was "undiagnosed, but clearly bipolar."
My darling Jeannie, bi-polar is a serious ailment that can affect quite a few people. Most of the persons we hear about, like John, have a repoir with the media, whether it's for sports, movies, or some other type of hyped glory. Some people want all atttention, some want just glorified attention, and some want none. Some have bad luck, some have good luck. The media wants the luck.
How about your life being under a microscope, or being filmed every day? Would you be comfortable with that? John makes a great deal of money, but would you sacrifice your privacy for what he might experencience in one day? Don't throw stones, Jeannie, your liquor store owner or bartender might not prefer that you do that.
John does have an issue, but criticism due to personal feelings is no where close to helping any person with any issue.
I don't think you are qualified to diagnose "bi-polar".
