John Daly has plenty of reasons his peers could judge him. His on-course antics, his off-course antics and oh, you know, the occasional "getting arrested at Hooters" thing. The past few weeks, however, have actually been filled with positive Daly news, as the 42-year-old shot an 8-under 62 to close out the Hong Kong Open and improve his scoring average over the last 14 rounds to a smooth 68.86.
Stuart Appleby, however, is not impressed. It appears the Australian, whose home country is hosting Daly over the next two weeks for the Australian Masters and Australian PGA, became one of the few golfers to speak out against the long-hitting Daly, saying he was worried about Daly at these events.
"His game hasn't been to the level he wants it, and the sponsors have seen fit to see John Daly (play). Unfortunately there's a million guys who hit it as long as John Daly now. Very few, I guess, make it look as effortless as John does, but I don't think John's here because of his world ranking (603).It might be a little harsh but the statement couldn't be more true. Daly averaged 302.1 yards off the tee this season, good enough for eighth on the driving distance list, but not nearly as dominant as he once was in that category. We have guys like J.B. Holmes and Bubba Watson who can drive the ball miles down the fairways, yet haven't gambled, drank or disqualified themselves to the ninth ward."I'm not quite sure how that works. I guess he's a walking train wreck and unfortunately, people turn their heads to watch the train wreck."
As for the train wreck thing, that is Daly's niche. He is the "people's golfer" because he, like most of us, is a little crazy and wears his heart right over that Hooters patch on his sleeve. If I was Appleby, I'd probably be a little concerned with Daly coming back to Australia for a golf tournament since the last time he played the Australian PGA he tossed his putter in the water after shooting a 78 and was disqualified for not signing his scorecard.
Appleby had been paired with Daly at the Australian Masters that year and said Daly gave him something to model himself against.
So, Appleby avoids Foster's at all costs? I guess that makes two of us.Appleby remembers it well; he was paired with Daly on the opening two days in what was his first appearance at the Masters, and remembers the hype, plus Daly's running commentary about his drinking habits.
"I'm trying to live the cleanest, straightest life here, and this is one of the world's greatest players. I was really confused by what he was telling me ... I'm thinking, 'I want to be the opposite to that'." The tournament starts on Thursday.
The tournament kicks off on Thursday in Melbourne.

I'd rather play with Fred Funk, he has the greatest personality and remembers it's a game and has fun, even when it's on the line.

John Daly is a golfing world legend. The ordinary world can relate to him, because most of the western world go on drunken benders now and again, alot have had divorces and relationship problems, and alot of people have been arrested. Who has not done stupid things. John Daly is honest and straight up. I hope he goes to Australia and kicks appleby in the back side on the golf course with sizzling 62"s and other stuck up pretencious do goodie golfers like him. Who has not shot a bad round and wanted to throw the entire bag of clubs in the lake on the last, at least Daly has the emotion to show the world he is normal. GO JOHN DALY show the aussies how good you are these next two weeks

Not all of us love JD. He has talent, but it seems he has wasted most of it. He is an emotional train wreck, just ask any of his wives. Sorry John.

Appleby lost his wife in a car accident, you didnt see him go nuts and start drinking and acting like a complete moron, he manned up and went positive - John Daly needs to follow Appleby example and stop feeling sorry for himself and MAN THE HELL UP ALREADY !!!

A walking train wreck with two majors vs a better golfer with no majors. Hows does that work? Bottom line is golf, much like the NBA, is a sport where a player can make millions of dollars with out having to play up to the best of their abilities. When the best of the best show up, the rest of the pros are playing for scraps. Appleby forgets that JD is still a better draw than he is at many tournaments. It sometimes takes a train wreck to make the other accidents look better. Patch

I don't know if i'd call Daly a train wreck. I would say that his career has had a "major derailment" and it's up to John to rerail and continue on the straight track.

JD is one of the better talents on the PGA Tour although he has (and is) wasting a talent given to very few who love the game. However, I think it's most inappropriate for another player to demean a fellow competitor such as Appleby has done. "No comment" would have been more apt and yet still convey the disapproval he intended. Remember, if you criticise another's behavior you're in effect saying you're much better.

John needs to play golf and quit feeling sorry for himself. John needs to leave the alcohol alone and play golf. He is talented but then so are alot of athletes who never play to their potential because of drugs and alcohol. We love ya John but get it together and play. It's getting old.

Hey Appleby, who died and made you JD's judge and jury!? Yes, Daly has his problems and he needs a relationship with God more than he needs a relationship with another links-lizard.
I'm glad you saw his troubles as something you don't want in your life, but to bad-mouth JD to the entire world shows us that you've got a few flaws too.
I hope you're not in the group playing ahead of him this coming week. If you are; I would keep a lookout cause one of JD's long drives is liable to hit you in the back of the head!!!
