You know that part at the end of Wizard of Oz when the voice booms over everything? In the golf world, that is Tiger Woods, except it isn't some little man coming out from behind the curtain (Tiger has more muscles).Tiger's caddy, Steve Williams, made some rather interesting remarks on the second most famous golfer in the land, Phil Mickelson, this past week, going as far as calling Lefty a pr**k and saying he hates him. Mickelson's response was extremely mature and handled as well as he could have -- "All I could think of was how lucky I am to have a class act like Bones (his caddie, Jim Mackay) on my bag and representing me."
Now, Tiger's voice reigns over them all, speaking for the first time publicly about the incident concerning his caddy.
"I was disappointed to read the comments attributed to Steve Williams about Phil Mickelson, a player that I respect," Woods said in a statement Monday. "It was inappropriate. The matter has been discussed and dealt with."Alright, very Tiger. He said something without really saying anything.
I guess this is where the plot thickens. Tiger canned his first caddy, Fluff Cowan, because Fluff was getting "too big" for his own good. Fluff was rubbing shoulders with the media, trying to make extra bucks on the side and Tiger had enough. No hard feelings, just move on to someone else.
What is the future for Steve? As most would agree, Williams is as good a caddy as Tiger is golfer. Other caddies have said that unlike some, Williams has never locked up under pressure and is never scared to give his opinion, like when he told Tiger to hit the hard lob wedge on the 18th hole at Torrey Pines this year instead of trying to skip up the sand wedge (result -- birdie, playoff, eventual win).
With that said, is all this drama too much for Team Tiger? The king of avoiding controversy now finds himself smack dab in the middle of it, with his arch rival, Mickelson, coming out the good guy. The image Tiger brings is one of professionalism and perfection, and this is far from both of those things.
He says he discussed it and dealt with it, but the hourglass sand might have started with Steve on his loop.
I'd have to be lying if I didn't say it will be an interesting moment when those three are on the tee box shaking hands for the first time in 2009. I bet that won't be awkward.

Comments (Page 1 of 1)
Steve Williams doesn't take a crap without Tigers go ahead. No doubt Tiger laughed and then played the role of disappointed boss, when things got out of hand. Williams is a known homosexual and probably thinks Phils man boobs are attractive. But for Tiger to act like he is on Steve and "had a talk" is a bigger joke than the country Williams is from. Steers and Queers come from Zealand....Williams has no horns...so....
G hale you probably couldn't even find "Zealand" (sic) on a map. Before slagging an entire country off...at least get the name right. Prick.
It appears that one of these two golf employers has chosen poorly in his choice of a employee/representative. Maybe reconsideration is necessary.
When Fluff got too big for his caddie shorts, Tiger didn't hesitate to fire him...
With this outburst, Steve is going down a dangerous cart path. I'd be surprised if he ever loops for Tiger again.
Oh give me a break. Who cares what Steve Williams said about Phil? This is not a controversy! You politically correct Democrats hush up and do like Tiger, dismiss it as no big deal and move on!
This is the dumbest comment I have ever read on any message board - EVER. Democrats? Republicans? Politically motivated correctness? For anyone who doesn't follow the game -- Steve Williams is a big-mouthed punk who can hide behind Tiger, the most thin-skinned man in sport himself - which is so damn ironic because he is probably the most talented man in sport.
Randy that sounds to me more like a Republican being politically correct. They already think their crap don't smell. Look at the economy. And who really gives a s..t what Steve says. Steve Williams says something and brings the golfing community to it's knee. Also G. Hale who gives a rats ass about his Steve Williams gender. As Kiwi stated learn your Geography before you start talking crap, that's why Steve's having problems now, talking without really thinking the ramifications to follow. And Fluff was just a jerk.
Gee FreddyB...aren't you the intellect with such profound grammar as "they think their crap don't stink!" Wow...I bet you're from West Virginnie...aren't ya! Stick with what you might know about the sport and lay off your political commentary...of which "you don't know crap about!"
For goodness sake, why doesn't everyone get a life. Talk about a storm in a teacup.
Or shoudlit be a D-cup?
Steve William's comment was made at a PRIVATE CHARITY event in New Zealand. Phil was described as being a "prick", in NZ I believe it's akin to calling someone a 'jerk' in the USA. So why the big deal? Why does the media have to blow this thing way out of proportion based on a 'paparazzi' reports from a little town in NZ (might as well be in the middle of the tundra). Steve will be wiser for it next time.
I wouldn't call someone who gave $1million to a Children's Hospital in New Zealand a jerk as well as other countless appearances at various charity events in NZ. Would you?
This was a small faux pas and people should just get over it. Sticks and stones.
