You know when you are deciding to fly somewhere, and you have to buy a ticket? Or when you're going on vacation and you obviously have to register at a hotel to secure your room? Well, the PGA Tour works similarly to that, as golfers have to register their names with tournaments they want to play in so officials know who will be there and how many golfers are showing up.
Pretty simple process, I suppose. That is, unless you're Chad Campbell.
The 2008 runner-up at the Sony Open boarded a plane to Hawaii to play in what he claims to be "one of my top five favorite tournaments we play all year." Campbell was probably looking to get off to a good start to the season so he could secure a high ranking and qualify for Accenture Match Play and all that good stuff. Well, the thing is, Campbell forgot to tell the Sony Open he was coming.
"Not good," Campbell said Thursday from his home outside Dallas. "I had actually thought about it on the plane, that there was a chance I didn't commit. I found out when I got off the plane."An eight-hour flight from Dallas to Hawaii can really make you think. When Campbell landed in Honolulu, he was told he wasn't registered for the event, so the Texas native flew back home after one round of golf with his caddy and a buddy.
Campbell -- whom, as you may remember was on the receiving end of that Shaun Micheel near hole-out in the 2003 PGA Championship -- admitted this was the first time he'd done such a thing, and then stated what we are all probably thinking.
"It would have been nice had it been a little bit closer," he said. The next tournament Chad is signed up for (yes, he is actually signed up for it) will be the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, which he won in 2006.

PGA too important to follow up??? Maybe they're not making enough $$ to send a reminder...Chad could have been out of town--Maybe the P.O. screwed up (that never happens)..
Tired of these stuffed shirts and their overbearing attitudes.

It is NOT the PGA's job to contact every golfer who is eligible to play in a tournament to see if they want to play. There are more than 200 golfers eligible. There is a priortiy list, and as each golf does not sign up, those lower on the list get a shot. Many golfers have agents or staff who handle this, some do not. Look at the bright side, he isn't operating on a financial shoe string and just spent his last $500 to get to the tournament.
