Colin Montgomerie Named 2010 European Ryder Cup Captain

Nice Faldo, step right over there, sir. The Europeans have a new honcho to take over your "captaincy."

Colin Montgomerie, or "Mrs. Doubtfire" to some, was named captain for 2010 on Wednesday, becoming the youngest captain ever for the Euros.
"It's not just an honor but a huge responsibility as well," Colin Montgomerie said Wednesday after being chosen to captain Europe's team for next year's Ryder Cup in Wales. "It is important we do everything we can to claim back the Ryder Cup in Wales in 2010."
Monty was the second most successful European ever in the Ryder Cup, but he hopes his success will be better than that of the most successful: Faldo.

I think after the whupping the Europeans took at the hands of a Tiger Woods-less American team in 2008, this pick was as smart as they come. Montgomerie was in the running with Jose Maria Olazabal, Sandy Lyle and Ian Woosnam, but you have to pick Colin here.

First, the compeition is not only in Europe, but in Wales, next door to Monty's Scotland. People will be pretty riled up for this one all around the U.K.

Second, the team needs a face that one associates with the Ryder Cup. While Monty could never win a major (or even a tournament on American soil), he was as hot as Freida Pinto when it came to these matches. If fans and players are to feel experience and passion from one person, Monty is it.

Third, maybe if he coaches this team to a win, that guy that wouldn't paint him will paint him now. Bonus!
