As a result, Dustin Johnson, the leader through 54 holes, was handed a big, shiny trophy, a hefty paycheck, and a free ticket to the 2009 Masters. The tournament's final round was originally postponed to Monday, but the rain picked up again this morning and forced Tour officials to cancel the final round.
The rain left many of Pebble's greens and fairways unplayable. The first group was scheduled to tee off at 7:30, but tour officials made the decision to end the tournament shortly after 7 a.m. Johnson learned of the decision about 7:15, when another player called to congratulate him on his victory. You would think that when weather managed to cancel the final round of a tournament six times over the past 50 years that Tour officials would consider rescheduling it. On the other hand, it's not much warmer or nicer in other parts of the country, and, hey, 44 out of 50 ain't bad!
This was the sixth time since 1958 the tournament was shortened to 54 holes (it was only a 54-hole event from 1947-57). Johnny Miller won that way in 1974, as did John Cook in 1981, Fuzzy Zoeller in 1986, Phil Mickelson in 1998 (after returning in August for the third round) and Payne Stewart in '99.
This is tremendous news, though, for Johnson, because he landed an automatic invite to the first two majors of the year with his second tour victory.

As a former resident of that area and follower of the tournament, I think it's great that the rounds are played the way they are. Bing would be proud that the match is basically the same as it was 50 yrs ago.

I've seen them complete the British Open in worse weather. If Ian and Gary could play, why not the field. This was Sunday.
