It was supposed to be the tournament Tiger Woods came back in, but it quickly became the tournament in which Geoff Ogilvy staked his claim as best golfer in the world.
The Australian, who won the Mercedes Championship earlier this season, triumphed over Paul Casey in the finals of the Accenture Match Play Championship, 4-and-3, to quietly become the best golfer in the game that nobody is talking about.
Face it, Tiger was the story this week. He came back, he won his first match and he once again showed that he is the most recognizable and largest figure in the sports world. He took over our lives and for good reason -- he's the best and you can't change that.
When Woods lost to Tim Clark in the second round and Phil Mickelson quickly was flamed out a day later, the tournament was basically put to rest by the major media and left to golf freaks like us. Ogilvy didn't let it bother him. He went out and took down Casey by playing the finals at 13-under, getting up and down throughout the tournament an astonishing 34 of 38 times (perspective time -- that is playing golf both Saturday and Sunday, missing every green the entire weekend and missing only one putt).
Ogilvy now has to be the front-runner at Augusta. He has won twice this season, taking two big events with nobody really taking notice. He has yet to miss a cut in '09 and already has a major championship under his belt. HIs play over this week was astounding, and the numbers basically make that true -- the guy registered four bogeys the entire week.
Now, golf has the CA Championship and the Arnold Palmer before we get to hear the sweet music of Augusta. It is golf with Mr. Woods again, and now an Australian who likes to bike and makes birdies. You think the NBA is hot? Wait the next month or so. This sport is hitting its stride, and that is anything but a bad thing.

Ok. Where are the Tiger haters? You must have been some of the few viewers who watched this match. Many of you say that you like golf better when Tiger isn't playing, so I hope you enjoyed watching this with the other few viewers!
Now what are you Tigger cult club members going to say since your leader disappointed you yet again? Oh, I know, all of you will say how "Rusty" he was and that you didn't have high hopes for him to do well. But again, had he won, you would have been thumping your chest and proclaiming how great he is. Had he played Ogilvy the first round, he might have gone home and never played golf again....Ogilvy would have spanked him like the baby he is....
Everyone misses the real golf story if they only follow Tiger. Golf certainly gets a boost from the best, but there are dozens of great players and even more great stories. Check it out.http://tinyurl.com/czczdp
