The Masters' television coverage is still an hour off, but thanks to the wonders of Al Gore's magnificent invention, I've been watching groups make their way around Amen Corner since this morning. Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson and Camilo Villegas just navigated the three-hole stretch at even par, 1-over and 1-over, respectively.
But for me, the scores -- at least momentarily -- were secondary; the real story was svelte Phil's fashion statement. He's sporting an ensemble he unveiled earlier this year at the Buick: white hat, black shirt, white belt, black pants and white shoes. It's sorta like the cookie.
One teevee commentator even informed me that Phil looks "a lot leaner in his upper body ... much stronger," which, relatively speaking, is probably true. (Although we were talking about this last spring; I'll really be impressed if Mickelson's an inch taller this year, too.) Still, next to Villegas, who is also wearing black today (but opted to leave the "hey, check out my midsection!" white belt at home), they look like Before and After.
On the upside, there's a weight-loss commercial in there somewhere.
As for the actual golf: through 14 holes, Furyk is T-6 at 3-under, Phil's T-37 at even par, and Villegas is T-78 at 2-over. The current leader in the clubhouse? Possibly the most fashionable dude on the course: Shingo Katayama (5-under), his cowboys hat and that necklace. Heavens.
And because you're curious: Tiger's even through three.
