Sergio Garcia is the golfer with the ubiquitous title of "Best Golfer Never to Win a Major." It's silly that we actually apply it, but then again, such titles are the reasons sports exist. (Please don't let anyone fool you that they're hear for anything other than to mock people who can't manage to win.)Anyway, today Sergio decided to switch from the putter he has used all year long ... back to the belly putter! Fashion faux pas aside, there's no reason to think this is a good idea.
Now, critics of me stating this will point out Garcia's statistical production this season: 20th in greens in regulation + 122nd in putting average + 101st in scoring average = really bad putting all year long. So maybe he was due for a switch.
Here's my counter-argument: Sergio Garcia doesn't have the requisite confidence that is required for a major equipment change right before a, um, major. How do I know that? Because he said so himself, dropping this nugget earlier in the week: "my head is not in the right place."
Now, in fairness to the decision, Sergio did trim his nearly a stroke and a half off his putts per round on Thursday at Augusta, needing only 29 putts for his first 18 at the Masters; he's averaged 30.25 per round on the season.
But the reality is that a drastic equipment change right before a huge tournament is one of the biggest signs that a player lacks confidence, and even though Augusta might be in good condition for low scoring today, blind luck isn't landing anyone in a green jacket.

If that putz Garcia ever by some miracle won a major, his head would explode.
