Boo Weekley: Golfer, Fisherman, Sage

Boo Weekley joined the PGA Tour in 2002, more backwater cult figure than professional golfer. He lost his card after the season and languished on the Nationwide Tour till 2005, but he's gone from rain pants and sneakers to big boy clothes, two tour wins, one outstanding Ryder Cup showing, and is now the 67th-ranked player on the planet.

Not bad for a dude who called Augusta National "just another golf course," admitted that he "couldn't tell you" which holes constituted Amen Corner, and thought George W. Bush was dead.

After missing the cut at the Masters last week, Weekley headed to Harbour Town, where he's the two-time defending champion. During a radio interview leading up to the tournament, Mr. Boo offered his thoughts on a possible three-peat:
"I feel like we can ... I'm about wore out. I've been on the road about eight weeks. So I'm a little tired right now. I'm trying to find stuff to do. It started lightning out there, I was fishing in the back yard in this pond and about that time a lightning bolt struck and I looked back and my ma hollered at me and she said, "what are you doing?" and I said, "I better hope you're holding that door open 'cause I'm on my way in cause the way my luck's been going I think I might need to get inside on this one."
Some of that made sense, right? Weekley fired a first-round 69, but is 4-over through 11 holes on Friday. (He's battling a right wrist injury that saw him olé many of his tee shots in Round 1, which makes the 2-under even more impressive.)

No golf interview would be complete without a Tiger Woods mention. Weekley's response when asked if he watched Tiger's and Phil's Sunday shootout at Augusta.
"I'm sorry. I didn't watch none of it, to see what Tiger and them did. I turned it on and I watched Kenny birdie the 16th hole and was like, "well he's won this one and congratulations to Kenny" you know and next thing you know I go upstairs and I'm getting all my stuff organized in the room I'm staying in and I hear my ma and pa down here hollering and screaming like someone done jumped in here trying to scalp 'em and I didn't know what was going on and I ended up watching the golf and the ending and Cabrera and the whole deal."
It's almost as if Boo isn't real.
