Who knew Quail Hollow would be the site of one of the best fields in golf next week? The Quail Hollow Championship (formerly the Wachovia Championship) committee chairs probably celebrated early Friday like they had won the dang golf tournament when Tiger Woods committed to playing next week. The week after Quail Hollow, Tiger committed to the Players Championship, making it the first time since his knee surgery that Woods will play back-to-back events.
Tiger will join Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, Vijay Singh, defending champion Anthony Kim, and Angel Cabrera as 10 of the top-14 players in the world will be teeing it up in Charlotte. Rumors that Woods would play turned into reality when he announced his intent to be in the field for next week on his website.
Woods won the then-Wachovia championship in 2007 by shooting 13-under par. He didn't play last year because of that pesky knee, and will be attempting to win the Players for the first time since 2001.
"I'm really looking forward to both events," Woods said. "They are exceptional golf courses that challenge all parts of your game."In related news, the above quote was nominated for soundbite of the year.
