Is Ochoa More Dominant Than Tiger?

Every Monday during the PGA Tour season, Monday Pin Placement will run as a wrap-up of the weekend's action. Basically, we'll focus on what you missed while you were out grinding on the putting green.

Ochoa vs. Woods -- When Annika Sorenstam was at the peak of her game, a stretch between 2001-05 that had Annika claim eight major championships in 18 stars, she became buddies with Tiger Woods, text-messaging Woods after majors to compare their big tournament wins.

With Lorena Ochoa continuing to dominate the LPGA, it might be time for Tiger to land Lorena's phone number.

Her 25-under par at the Corona Championship on Sunday was good enough for a one-shot victory and her second title of '09. After five starts, you almost got the feeling that something was wrong with Lorena. That kind of analysis is only similar to the "struggles" seen with one other golfer in the world -- Mr. Woods.

Their numbers are fairly similar since 2006. Tiger has missed one cut since '06 to Ochoa's zero, with Ochoa winning 23 of her 78 tournaments and Tiger winning an astounding 20 of 40. While his percentage is obviously much better, Ochoa does have more hardware in her trophy case. Maybe even more impressive in this recent four-year stretch for both players is their ability to always be in the hunt. Tiger has finished in the top-10 80 percent of the time to Lorena's 79.2 percent since '06, numbers that nearly seem unbelievable in such an up-and-down game as golf.

In the last two seasons, they both have only two major championships but have contended in basically all the others. If the LPGA is looking for someone to toss down the gauntlet, look no further than its top player. Ochoa's win on Sunday came at a tournament that saw Lorena open with consecutive rounds of 8-under 65 and card just four holes all week over par.

There is only one battle in golf worth talking about, and it comes between Pac-10 rivals. Lorena and Tiger are the names in golf. All the others are just flashes in the pan.

Kelly Breaks Slump -- Jerry Kelly was teeing it up last week in his 200th tournament since his last PGA Tour victory. Kelly turned pro in 1989, but it took him 13 seasons to claim his first PGA Tour title, but in Kelly's case, when it rains it pours.

See, back in 1995, playing on the then-Nike Tour, Kelly snagged his first win at the Alabama Classic, only to back that one up with a win at the Buffalo Open. Those were his only victories ever on the Nationwide Tour, and after his victory in '02 at the Sony Open in Hawaii, Kelly again won for the second time in a season at the Western Open.

His victory on Sunday at the Zurich Classic showed again that golfers can improve the older they get. Kelly made four bogeys all week at TPC Louisiana on his way to his third career victory and needed a shaky two-footer to drop on the 18th (that barely curled in) to do so. It only makes sense that Kelly would win another tournament this season. No point in breaking tradition.

Final Round Handshakes ...

--This week's Quail Hollow Championship is shaping up to be one of the toughest non-major fields of the year. Ten of the top-14 in the world will be in attendance for the event, including Tiger, Phil Mickelson and defending champion Anthony Kim.

--Barack Obama took some much needed R&R this weekend with his first round of golf as president. Sure, his golf swing isn't that incredible, but there is something about a president finding harmony on the golf course that comes off as appealing. May I suggest inviting a certain golf blogger on your next round out, Mr. President? We can even become BBM buddies.

--Nobody has seen the new-look John Daly, who is reportedly 40 pounds lighter, but invitees at the Murray Brothers Caddyshack Tournament will get a fresh look before he plays in the Scottish Open next week. Daly was invited to the charity event, and although he wouldn't give any interviews, he did hire an off-duty security guard to man his VIP room. Hey, that has to be a better sign than asking people for $25 per autograph at a random Hooters.
