Even before Tony Romo became "Starting Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Tony Romo," the man always took time away in the offseason to try and qualify for the Byron Nelson Championship. This year, Romo was in contention to qualify before those nasty golf demons filled his head and forced Romo to finish his last three holes 5-over. Romo shot a 79 at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club to miss out on advancing out of the pre-qualifying for the PGA Tour event in Dallas. As anyone might know from tournament golf, those last few holes can be the toughest.
Romo gained the most notoriety for his golf game when he shot an 84 at the U.S. Open Challenge last year at Torrey Pines. His game has always been solid, shooting a 79 in the pre-Byron qualifying the year I played in the same field as he did.Sitting at 2 over with three holes to play and in contention to finish in the top 23 and move on to the next round of qualifying, Romo made an eight on the par 5. After a perfect tee shot, his second shot sailed right and into hip-high grass. Needing a few minutes to find his ball – with the help of some spectators – Romo took three hacks in the tall stuff before getting into the opening.
He bogeyed his final two holes to finish 7 over.
Some complain that Romo needs to pay more attention to his actual job and less attention to a hobby, but I respect Romo for going out and trying to do what most can't do. The guy is a competitor, and even if he didn't make it to the next stage, he showed people that he is very talented in more ways than just one.
