Man Pulls Gun on Group for Slow Play

There are a few things people insist on doing when the group in front of them is playing slow. Hands on the hip is an appropriate one. Yelling from the tee box is another. Hell, if you're frustrated enough, hitting into the group can sometimes put a fire in the slow group's behind. But, pull a gun on 'em? That seems to be a bit much.

Don't tell that to 73-year-old Edwin Dailey, who pulled out a loaded pistol at the slow golfers ahead of him, claiming he was, and I saw this in my creepiest voice possible, "obligated to destroy" Matt Nader, a former Austin (Tx) Westlake High School football player.

According to Dailey's arrest affidavit, Nader and two friends were playing golf when Dailey approached them at the ninth hole. The affidavit said Dailey complained that they were playing too slowly and had parked their golf cart inappropriately.

The argument continued for four more holes; at the 13th hole, Dailey told Nader that he would get his gun and "make them both equal," the affidavit said.

You know, sometimes you can just go up to the guys and ask to play through. In my experience, that has tended to work. Threatening lives with insane proclamations like "obligated to destroy" and "make both equal" probably isn't going to do the trick.

The scuffle eventually flooded into the parking lot, where Mr. Logical made another bid for "citizen of the year."

After the 18th hole, all of them ended up in the parking lot together, the affidavit said, and Dailey reignited the confrontation and told the three men to stay away from him because he felt threatened.

After a verbal exchange, Dailey pulled out a .25-caliber Browning handgun loaded with hollow-point bullets and pointed it at Nader, the affidavit said. The three men took cover behind cars, fearing for their lives, the affidavit said.

As you probably expected, Dailey was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and released on $15,000 bail. The moral of the story? If you're out enjoying golf and this guy comes up asking you to play through, you let the man play through. Also people to let play through -- Buffalo Bill and David Koresh, even though I'm not sure if either had a decent handicap.
