At 6:30 this morning, Tony Romo, inexplicably at Tiger Woods' invitation, joined the world's best player in the AT&T National pro-am at Congressional Country Club, some 20 miles west of FedEx Field, home of the Washington Redskins. On Tuesday, Tiger said that, "...It's just going to be a fun round," before adding, "...but also an interesting one. Granted, he's used to getting booed, and it is what it is. It comes with being, I guess team sport, away from home."
And University of Maryland basketball coach Gary Williams did his part to make sure that's exactly what happened. And via Dan Steinberg's Twitter feed, so too did one of Congressional's starters.
"Starter on 7th tee: 'Let's Give [Romo] a warm Washington Redskins welcome!' Fans: 'Boooooooooo!' Finally."
Good times.
PGA Tour golfer Paul Goydos helps put things in perspective:
"Do I think they should interfere with the round of golf? No," said Goydos, himself a Rams fan. "Do I think they should give him some [stuff] if they get the opportunity? That's part of life. He gets paid very well. I don't know that you should be hassling Tiger because he's got Romo out there. But a Cowboy coming into Redskin or Eagle or Giant territory has to expect that a little bit. For me to tell them it's inappropriate is not fair. Those people are nuts."I'd even suggest it's fine to hassle Tiger, too. Since, you know, he invited Romo to play with him.
Not to worry, though, Washington-area athletes will be represented. According to the Washington Times' John Taylor, Bruce Boudreau, Jason Campbell and Antwaan Randle El teed off with Mike Weir in the group behind Woods and Romo. Sadly, no Cap'n Smoot sightings, however.
