Tiger Woods struggled with his putting at Bethpage Black two weeks ago, and he cited that as the primary reason he only managed a T6 at the U.S. Open. After two rounds at the AT&T National, the tournament Tiger is hosting at Congressional Country Club, he's 10-under par, one shot clear of Rod Pampling. Following a Thursday 64 that included a four-birdie, no-bogey front nine, Woods fired 66 on Friday. No idea what 36 nearly flawless holes from the World No. 1 means for media-driven theory that Tiger isn't the player he once was, but he's in great position to win for the third time in nine starts this season. (And the six other events were all top-10 finishes. Yes, clearly Woods is done.)
Tiger started his day two strokes behind Anthony Kim, who shot a course-record 62 on Day 1. Today, Kim had an afternoon tee time, and the fairways/greens/one-putt formula he had working Thursday eluded him in Round 2. After starting the round 2-under, Kim carded three bogeys from holes 9-14, then parred out, and signed for a 70, which currently puts him in third place at 8-under.
"I hate the way I hit the ball today. It was okay for about six or seven holes, but the swing got loose and I couldn't find it out there," Kim told Golf Channel's Steve Sands after his round. As for not losing your mind when nothing goes right, Kim added, "I'm in a good state of mind. I know I'm healthy, I know I'm starting to swing it well, I know things are starting to come around. And I had a great attitude out there so just keep that up and start working on my swing and I'll be good."
Kim's playing partner, Jim Furyk, followed a 4-under first day with a 3-under effort Friday and heads to the weekend at 7-under.
It's July 4 weekend, and, in general, this time of year doesn't yield much in the way of compelling sports story lines. Tiger leading his own tournament changes that, which must make CBS, the network carrying the AT&T, very happy.

Tiger cruises for another by crushing everyone on sat.
Way to go Tiger,Kick more butt tomorrow, O.K.?
Tiger Woods is by far the best golfer the world has ever seen. That said I wish Tiger would get some class. I get very tired of his swearing and hissy fits.He also needs to interact with his fans more, not during play but before and after his rounds. His caddy also lacks any class. He acts like a bodyguard and enforcer.
Still don't have a clue do you ????????
Hey, Bill - are you THERE before and after Tiger's rounds? How in the hell do YOU know how he interacts with the fans before and after he plays?
Yeah Bill. Tiger was autographing hats, programs, etc after yesterday's play. But I guess YOU didn't see that, did you?
Tiger is a class act. Bill is just jealous.
I agree he needs to stop the swearing stop but hey we all have at least one fault.
Good golly, Tiger has a high IQ, is handsome, talented, a good family man and there has never been any of the crap that most men hand out to those around him that would lead to scandal. He is so near perfect that it is almost scary. I am 70 and have never met another like him and I have met many men among them one Bill Clinton. At least Tiger does not act like him.
you are spot on. If the worst thing Tiger does is swear, well, that's close enough to perfect .
Yeah Hello Walter...bet he was....he will always do that when he's up...see if he does that when he's down...he will never be a Palmer or a Mickelson when it comes to being an ambassador for the game..he needs to understand that it is for the people too..not just himself
Barbara...Tiger is "so near perfect it is almost scary"? Yeah, like when he hits a bad shot and mf's in front of the world to see or how about throwing clubs....yeah, he's near perfect.
Cussing has nothing to do with what kind of person one is. Some of the greatest people in the world are cussers, and whether you hypocrites will admit it or not, MOST adults cuss. Do you feel good feelings for our service men and women? Well, there are prodigious amounts of cussing going on in the armed services - does that make them bad people? Your value-systems need fine -tuning...
No one has said that Tiger is a bad person just that he needs to class up his act. He is in front of millions of people and should set a better example.Young people look up to him and think if he can act like that then it must be OK. Sports stars in general should be setting examples for out children
One can stay on top only for so long, time and age (one of the same) usually creeps upon you. AND..no matter how good one is, there will be always be someone a little bit better, that is a FACT! Possibly the only way one can remain 'numero uno' is once getting there..RETIRE!
But, Bill - My contention is that Tiger IS a class act, cussing or not. It doesn't get any classier than Tiger, playing-wise and lifestyle-wise. The world would benefit from having more people like him...
Off the golf course I agree with you but when he is in front of millions of people he owes them more responsible actions.
