A rough month for Phil Mickelson and his family just got a lot tougher when news hit that Phil's mother, Mary Mickelson, has been diagnosed with breast cancer less than seven weeks after Amy Mickelson, Phil's wife, was told she had the same disease.Tina Mickelson, Phil's sister, said on Monday that Mary was diagnosed with breast cancer a week ago and will go in for surgery at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, the same hospital Amy was being treated at last Wednesday.
Tina Mickelson said she wanted to make her mother's condition known to the public so that she could receive support and prayers, just as Amy did. There has been a tremendous outpouring for the Mickelsons from players and fans on the PGA Tour.
"She is hanging in there with everything, and this initial positive news is a relief," Tina Mickelson wrote in an email. "She still has a long road ahead of her, but at least things are looking like they are heading in the right direction."Mary, who still lives in the same house that she and husband Phil Sr. raised Phil and his two siblings, was named Mother of the Year by the San Diego Chapter of the March of Dimes in 1998. Our thoughts and prayers continue to stay with the Mickelson family.

Do you know how many MOM out there Diagnosed With Breast Cancer everyday and the media don't report it, and here golf player mom has it, they report it, if you want to report it, then report all the MOM in this world who have Diagnosed With Breast Cancer not just the people you know.
When you are diagnosed with a terminal disease that will eat away at you, George, likely you will be all alone line you deserve.
@ HUNNER
This has nothing to do with anyone getting a terminal illness. Everyone in the world has been affected by cancer, so pretending to be offended is ridiculous. Also, Breast Cancer is hardly a terminal illness in its early stages and is very treatable -- but this is not my point.
I was pointing out why it is stupid to expect FANHOUSE to blog about every person with Breast Cancer...this is a sports blog. This is only being mentioned because it is affecting one of the most famous golfers in the game. Why is that difficult to comprehend. Various things happen to a lot of people, but they'll only be mentioned here if it's related to sports.
Anyway, good luck to Phil and his family. His situation is really shitty right now.
Thank you David, my sentiments exactly. Why are his family members more important than mine who died and are suffering from breast cancer, kidney cancer, prostate cancer. And the family members of so many who don't make millions smacking a little ball out on grass....Let's put life into perspective please!!!
AMEN DAVID. TOTALLY AGREE
What is wrong with you? Yes, I have relatives who are currently fighting the disease also. I think it's important to report when well known people are diagnosed with cancer....if it makes one person think *Maybe I should get checked too!* then it could possibly save a life. Pretty ridiculous to mention EVERYONE who has fought the cancer battle...we all realize it's not going to go away, and we need to do what we can to prevent it. Get a grip!!
Wow shall we just do as the bible states and pray one for another. That covers both your family and mine even though we might not be stars or rich. We do have one thing in common and that is we are all people! Wish everyone would act as such!!
God Bless Phil and his family.
my wife is healing from breast cancer and yes its a devastating disease. if phils wife waited all that time to start the surgery and healing process. then it was caught in time and the tumor is small in size. so i dont get why the shes getting all this support and publicity over a minor problem.
"Minor problem"? Breast cancer is NEVER a minor problem--I cannot believe you would say such a thing when your own wife has suffered from that terrible disease. Even with a small growth and treatment, there is always the specter of recurrence--this disease is very unpredictable. I hope you are more understanding and supportive with her. If you recall, Elizabeth Edwards's case was supposedly "cured" and she is now terminally ill. Phil Mickelson is a public person because of his outstanding athletic ability and his wife's and mother's illnesses are both news and inspiration to others to fight against this scourge.
Ron, Beast cancer is never considered a minor thing. You should look at your wife and think of the time when she was diagosed, I am sure you were upset. My friend was diagnosed with Stage 4 Breast Cancer, and had gone through chemo and radiation, was clear for 1 year when it metastisized in her lymph nodes, bone and BRAIN. Not only is she battling Breast Cancer, now it is Brain Cancer to worry about...
So don't tell me breast cancer is a minor thing. It is the #1 killer in women. Remember that each and every day you wife is living with this disease.
The sports blog you say this is concerned with is about Phil Mickelson, his wife Amy's cancer and NOW his mom has breast cancer. That is what this blog is written about.
Minor, until you get the disease you have no right to be dismissive. 2 times for my minor condition youheartless fool.
If you spent more time doing something important than maybe the media would pay attention to you. But right now, bloggers are rather common.
Just ignore the first two frigid dolts. They just don't get it. Sadly, one doubts they ever will. Wishing both Amy and Mary Mickelson the best in their fight to the finish line. Won't be easy, but they can do it. Nothing in life worth doing ever is. Living life and surviving- definitely worth it. Best of luck.
Ha ha that was funny George!
David: You are one sad individual. Of course moms all over the world have that happen to them. It happens to daughters too. But when someone like Phil goes through it with his wife and mom, it is understable that the news media will be involved. He is one of the best golfers in the world and has all the money he and his family would ever need. But news that even the well off experience the same kinds of troubles as the rest of us, shows that this dreadful illness doesnt select just the very poor, the middle class or the very rich. It is a sad heartbreaking story that doesnt need someone like you to be so harsh.
I can't believe the ...holes in this chain. This is a terrible thing and my prayers go out to the Mickleson's. The only positive that can be derived is the status of the celebrity and the good that may come from donations to breast cancer research.
I believe that any woman that is diagnosed with breast cancer needs all the love and support she can get. As a daughter who lost her mother to breast cancer I can only hope that the publicity that these women are recieving will only increase the awareness that there needs to be a cure found for this horrible disease. Because like someone else said it doesn't just affect the poor or middle class, it affects everyone. Trust me I know how horrible this disease can be. I only wish that there had been this much attention payed to it when my mother was diagnosed with it so maybe she would be here today to see her grandchildren.
Good Luck to the Mickelson women, they need our prayers, not the harsh comments people want to say just because they are related to a golf pro.
have to put in my two cents worth...David, why is it ok for you to give your opinion about someone you don't even know and when someone else you don't even know makes a comment about it, you turn into a jerk? you are one sad and angry human being.
SOME PEOPLE ARE SO FULL OF FOUL LANGUAGE THAT THEY CANNOT SEE THE...TREES FOR THE FOREST. THE TONGUE IS A...DEVOURING FIRE.
