Amy Mickelson Reportedly Doing Well After Breast Cancer Surgery

While the British Open will go down as a memorable match between history and reality, two players were noticeably missing over the weekend at Turnberry. Tiger Woods not making it to Saturday was all about his game. Phil Mickelson missing the British was all about his family.

Amy Mickelson, Phil's wife, had been diagnosed with breast cancer, but initial reports from Mickelson's website say that Amy is doing very well after surgery.

"The best news so far is that the cancer has not spread to the lymph nodes, which improves our chances of beating this in the short and long term," Phil Mickelson wrote in a posting on his website. "We're awaiting one test result that will influence Amy's treatment plan. The waiting and wondering sometimes can be the most difficult part but she has a very positive attitude and has handled all of this with her usual grace. I'm so proud of her."

Amy, who underwent surgery on July 1, isn't the only Mickelson that is struggling with this disease. Mary Mickelson, Phil's mother, has also been diagnosed with breast cancer and Phil said he continues to be overwhelmed by the support the family has received through these tough times.

"We continue to be overwhelmed with the support of our extended group of friends and family as well," he said. "The prayers, notes, articles, e-mails, texts, and packages get us through every day. We feel the support all around us. Our gratitude is hard to put into words."

Phil, who has always been a family man first and golfer second, has yet to say when he will return to the links, but I'm assuming it won't be until all is well with his family.
