FanHouse is fighting the rain at Greensboro's 2009 Wyndham Championship.GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Neither Michael Allen or Chris Riley will be remembered at the Wyndham Championship. Allen will end up with a top-five finish, and Riley led heading into the fourth day, but because they failed to make the playoff (or much noise on Sunday at Sedgefield for that matter) no one will discuss their presence here.
Kevin Stadler, who did make the playoff will be remembered, naturally. But for a bigger reason, all three golfers will probably look back at the 2009 Wyndham a little more fondly. That's because their respective performances this week guaranteed them a spot in the FedEx Cup and the opportunity to make some more money in the 2009 PGA season.
Stadler is projected to leap (at least) 90 spots in the FedEx Cup standings from his previous position of 143, which was outside the postseason cut, and now, with a good performance at the Barclay's, could almost guarantee himself a few extra tournaments.
Riley and Michael Allen were both facing elimination as well, and used their performances at the Wyndham to guarantee themselves extra golf. Allen is projected to vault 20 spots in the standings, up from 121 (where he was in the danger zone with a poor outing in Greensboro) and Riley's rounds at Sedgefield are projected to push him up ten spots and barely above the cut for the Barclay's at 119 overall.
Naturally, there are losers as well: Matt Jones, Rich Beem, Tom Watson, Charles Warren and Andres Romero all are projected to drop seven spots in the standings at the expense of the aforementioned golfers. In other words: the Wyndham still finds itself in a fantastically relevant position, because while Tiger Woods won't usually grace Greensboro with his presence, any golfers on the fringe of the FedEx Cup are all but guaranteed to bring their A-game here.
