For all the things Tiger Woods has done in his career, he had never stood over a putt to clinch a team match ... until Sunday. Eying a birdie putt on the par-4 13th, Tiger needed to do what he'd done all week at the Presidents Cup, and when the ball disappeared, it was another feather in the hat of Mr. Woods and a turkey leg for the Americans. The victory for the Americans was their third in a row, and Tiger left Harding Park, the site of his 2005 American Express Championship victory, 5-0, only the third time anyone has even finished the Presidents Cup with such a flawless record.
Of course, it wasn't all Tiger.
Hunter Mahan was the first out for the Americans on Sunday, and played a wonderful round of golf to defeat Camilo Villegas. Anthony Kim was another that found his form in San Francisco, turning it on in the singles match to beat Robert Allenby 5 and 3. Sean O'Hair, who came in the week as a project for Michael Jordan, obliterated Ernie Els 6 and 4.
But, as the golf world tends to do, it all goes back to Mr. Woods. His partnership with Steve Stricker was fabulous all week, and his closing stretch on Saturday morning on 17 and 18 will be an image burned into the history books of the Presidents Cup.
The win for the Americans is the sixth in eight Presidents Cup matches, with their lone defeat coming in 1998, at the site of the upcoming Presidents Cup, in Australia. The two sides also tied in the 2003 Presidents Cup.

Comments (Page 1 of 4)
and Johnny Miller still found it necessary to cast negativity toward tiger during the telecast.
Hater ,sad ,but his commentary of Tiger is PATHETIC
Yes. Miller put his foot in his orifice again;
especially when it involves Tiger.
Headlines such as "Tiger Woods wins President's Cup for US" really belittle the team aspect. He wasn't the only one playing & was certainly not the most fun to watch.
If Phil had been in the same position and done what TIGER did ,would that be exceptable to YOU ??????
Again, you just gotta love Shane Bacon. I read his coverage because his lack of golf knowledge, coupled with his all-knowing arrogance, dumbfounds me so much that he actually is able to pick up a paycheck for his drivel. Look at the headline: "Tiger Woods Wins Presidents (sic) Cup For The U.S." Shane, did you go to the tounrnament or were you just cryuising San Francisco bars looking for a little? Did you watch ANY of the TV coverage or even highlights? read the paper? Tiger played well, but was carried in 2 of his matches by Stricker. Phil carried U.S. golfers in several of his matches and you didn't even mention him in your usual "head up Tiger's ass" POS article. Who do I see about getting a job covering golf at AOL? Shane, you are absolutely the worst. But you make me laugh because you have this great job and yet you are so bottom of the barrel.
tiger will allways be tiger but did anyone notice yang did not shake tigers hand..is he a poor loser?...
Tommy,
I DID notice that and was wondering if I missed it. It appeared that he intentionally did not shake his hand... but again, the camera was all over the place.
Miller has always been a critic of Tiger. When Tiger became a pro, Miller was the very first one to say that Tiger will have a hard pro life. Well, today Miller is still saying Tiger has not made it but the problem is Miller can't even wear Tiger golf shoes today! Sooner or later will break Niclaus's record and hopefully Miller is still alive.
It is about time Tiger stepped up and played well in a team event. He has one of the worst individual records in team play for someone who is considered a great player. For anyone to say Tiger won the Cup is an insult to the rest of the team including Phil who didn't lose a match. Let's not forget Stricker played great and carried Tiger in 2 of his matches. Tiger's attitude and behavior on the course was appalling.
Amen, Tiger gets the headlines and somewhere about the 5Th paragraph they say but Phil played the best carrying his three partners while Tiger get carryied.
stop hatin' dude. deal with it America, without tiger golf would be weak!!!!
In reading all the comments about Tiger, it is very disapointing that everyone is so critical of this amazing golfer. Golf overall is as exciting as its ever been. Its time for all the critics to recongnize that Tiger Woods is one of the most amazing athletes EVER and it just crazy that everyone is so critical of him when he has done more for the game of golf than anyone has ever done with his amazing skill set.
The criticism is based on some people totally focusing on Tiger. Tiger is greaat. So are many other players and frankly I didn't enjoy the total focus on Tiger by the telecast. There were a lot of great players and terrific shots. Tiger did not win the Cup for America - the American Team won the cup. Stricker carried Tiger most of Saturday. Tiger didn't play the toughest player on the International Team. He would have probably lost to Clark and some of the other International players. Bugt, many others would have also lost to Clark. Give the rest of the players their dues. It took a Team effort - especially in the "four" player formats.
What you meant to say was that Arnold Palmer did
more for golf than any other golfer in history
with his skill set and other assets. Also, Miller
nor Tiger will ever see Woods reach 19 majors.
Tiger could learn something about grace from
Arnie and Phil.
I just love all you Tiger haters out there! You sound like a bunch of losers. Tiger is the greatest and I won't watch golf unless he's playing, go Tiger!
Although the top 3 players (Tiger, Phil and Steve) contributed the most points, it's still a team event. Anthony and Sean definitely found their game and secured the win as well as Hunter. Kudos to all! As for Miller's comments throughout the week - it's simple - he's ignorant and shouldn't be an analyst....nuff said!
t is a shame that so many did not see golf when it was played by people who respected the game and the fans. Tiger has brought a new mentality to the game where he feels it is okay to curse, swear, and throw clubs. Tiger even has his pet thug, Steve the maniac caddy, chase fans and destroy their property. Tiger also uses Steve Williams to make degrading comments about his fellow pros. If a professional photographer clicks through the back swing that is quite different than a new fan attending their first tournament (and regrettably their last). Tiger has Stevie, the thug, chase after the new fan who wanted a picture and unknowingly clicks during the back swing. Stevie has been known to grab the camera and smash them against trees. That is really a nice way to treat someone who just wanted to become a fan. Maybe just telling them that no pictures during the swing would be a kinder initiation. But the PGA lets Tiger get away with his boorish behavior. Perhaps golf should become more like professional wrestling. Maybe then the click of a camera would be the least disturbing fan action. Fans could start throwing sodas, beers and squid at the pro players. I am sure Tiger is encouraging that by his despicable behavior, The PGA commissioner is welcoming that behavior by his cowardice in addressing Tiger's behavior.
With that said, Tiger is a great golfer and he should work harder to be a role model so the game of golf remains something we all can be proud of.
Phan, you are a moron. How is Steve Williams supposed to know if someone is a first timer or not? ANYONE attending should know the etiquette and rules if standing that close to a golfer. Common sense would dictate not to take a picture when someone is swinging. One shot can make the entire tournament. As far as how Tiger acts on the course, I am fine with it. It's about time someone showed some emotion out there. The tired old rules and practices of golf went out about 50 years ago. All other sports are played with fire and emotion. That's what seperates Tiger from the rest of the pack. His will to win and his absolute hate for losing.
why are you hating on Tiger, because he is the number one player in the world and you can not accept the fact that no matter whay people are willing to pay to see him to play. Tiger have make golf what it is today with the great come backs and creative shots.
