Martin Laird made birdie from five feet on the third playoff hole Sunday to win the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, played at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas.
The 26-year-old Scotsman's first PGA Tour victory turned away George McNeill and Chad Campbell after all three players finished regulation play at 19 under.
The victory made Laird, a former Colorado State player who lives in Scottsdale, Az., only the third Scot to win on the PGA Tour, joining former Masters champ Sandy Lyle and 1999 British Open winner Paul Lawrie.
McNeill shot a final-round 67 to earn his way into the playoff, dropping a 20-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole well ahead of the final group and then waiting for the outcome.
Campbell (69) and Laird (68) would soon join McNeill -- with far more labor.
Campbell hit the 18th green with a 6-iron from 172 yards, but needed to drop a five-foot putt to save par and get into the playoff.
Laird, meanwhile, had to get up and down from 37 yards for his par at 18 and a chance at sudden death.
All three players made par off the first playoff hole -- No. 18 -- before Campbell was eliminated on the second -- the par-3 17th -- with a bogey.
Back at No. 18 for the third extra hole, Laird won after a mid-iron that tracked the flag. A moment before, McNeill's approach landed only a foot from water, forcing him to pull off his shoes and socks and stand in the hazard to hit.
Although McNeill was able to get his third shot to 15 feet, Laird ended the suspense with his birdie.
The day's big move belonged to Jim Furyk, who shot a 9-under 62, the day's low round.
Furyk, coming to Las Vegas from last week's Presidents Cup, began the day eight shots back following a third-round 73. But a bogey-less final round jumped him into a tie for fourth, one shot out of the playoff.
The 62 is a final-round career-low for Furyk, who played his final nine holes (the front nine at TPC Summerlin) with five birdies over his last six holes.
The finish is Furyk's 10th top-10 finish of the season, but he remained winless for the season.
