In what was as close a race as Secretariat vs. field, Tiger Woods was named PGA of America Player of the Year on Wednesday for the 10th time in his career.
The award was basically a lock for Woods, who won six events this season, the FedEx Cup, the Vardon Trophy and the Bryon Nelson Award for sporting the lowest scoring average, a salty 68.05. The main reason Tiger was able to claim this award, and most likely the PGA Tour Player of the Year which will be announced at a later date, is because all the major winners didn't make much noise in the other events.

Y.E. Yang was the only major winner to claim another title on the PGA Tour, the Honda Classic, with Stewart Cink, Angel Cabrera and Lucas Glover sporting their lone major win in their 2009 trophy cases.
The questions swirled after the PGA Championship, where Woods finished second to Yang, if he would, in fact, be player of the year, but a solid end of the season that saw Tiger win one of the FedEx Cup events and finish second in two others was a good enough close to give Tiger the POTY.
Also, was there any real question? Tiger, who most would say "struggled" in 2009, still won twice as many tournaments as anyone else on tour, including two more than all the major championship winners combined. He also finished in the top-6 in three of the four majors and was in the top-10 an astonished 14 out of 17 tournaments.
So, yeah, all in all a good, solid year by Tiger's standards that was miles better than anyone else. It's become typical for Woods to claim regular tour titles, but he still reminds us that no matter how he hits it, he's still the best by years end.

Congratulations! What everyone calls a less than an average season for Tiger still exceeds those other professionals in the same arena. Not winning a major may not be an acceptable standard by those who judge his performance, but it surely re-enforces Tiger's statement on acknowledging Jack's amazing 18 majors and why the record has stood for as long as it has. Jack's record and how it was accomplished speaks volumes on his career and measures his ability accordingly. Tiger should surpass the record someday, but until that day we should realize the significance of Jack's achievements.
He should have won it last year for his performance with a broken leg at the U.S. open. One of the greatest under duress wins in golf 's history. Yeah paddy won the PGA and The Britsh, but without Tiger in the field; you can stick an asterik on those two. Just ask Yang Chung and rich Beem.
Tiger will be POTY for years to come. WHY? Because he prepares himself like no other player. He eats right, exercises, practices and does all the right things to be the best. Any tournament without Tiger is like a day without sunshine. Just watching him walk down the fairway tells you why he is the best. Go Tiger!
What are you thinking? "Any tournament without Tiger is like a day without sunshine?" No, no and no.
Tiger is the greatest golfer of all time. Period.
