Tiger Woods was injured Friday morning in a car accident that led to his wife smashing a car window with a golf club to pull him out of the car. But after reports initially described Woods as seriously injured, the golfer issued a statement downplaying the severity of the crash.
Jay Mariotti: False Alarm Illustrates Tiger's Epic Impact
"Tiger Woods was in a minor car accident outside his home last night," the statement said. "He was admitted, treated and released today in good condition."
Daniel Saylor, the Windermere, Florida, police chief, told The Associated Press on Friday that Elin Nordegren, Woods' wife, used a golf club to smash out the back window and helped get Woods out of the car. She told officers she was in the house when she heard the accident. Saylor says officers found Woods lying in the street with cuts on his lips and blood in his mouth.
The Orlando Sentinel reported that Woods pulled out of his driveway at about 2:25 a.m., struck a fire hydrant and drove into a tree on a neighbor's property. Orange County Fire Rescue received a call for aid at Woods' residence at 2:28 AM ET.
Woods, who was driving a 2009 black Escalade, was taken to Health Central Hospital in Ocoee, Florida, in serious condition.
WESH 2 News reported that Woods has been treated for facial lacerations. According to WESH, the Florida Highway Patrol has determined that alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
According to the Sentinel, Health Central Hospital said at approximately 2:30 PM ET that Woods was not currently at the hospital, but it was not clear whether he was treated and released.
CNN, Fox News, ESPN and other TV stations broke into live programming to report on the accident, which raised fears about one of America's biggest sports stars. But good news came at about 3 PM ET when Darren Rovell of CNBC reported that Woods' agent said, "He is fine."

BJ; My sentiments exactly. Not so much that they have idle time, it's that there's not a whole lot of activity in the 'ol cranium when they try to use it.
Pity them, for they know not what they do.
Maybe he was trying to avoid a Alligator!
but offieicer the fire hydrant pulled rite out in front of me,, hickup,
Don't worry. He'll get someone else to pay his bill for him. You know he can't afford it on his own.
How do you get "serious" injuries just pulling out of your driveway? How fast was he going? We have not heard the whole story here.
i love Tiger.....hope he is ok to make it to the Wednesday's WGC Accenture Match Play
Opinions are like a$$holes, everyone's got one... even ME!
oooooooooooh noooooooooooo!!
iiiii knnnooooooo
Sounds like trouble in paradise. If Tiger loses his temper at home, like he does on the golf course, maybe Elin was trying to defend herself and hit him in the face.
The car accident is possibly a fake, to cover up for his injuries.
Go Elin! I can't imagine putting up with this egomanic. Great golfer or not. His attitude on the course is a reflection of who he is.
And guess what I like Tiger. The only reason I watch golf is to see him play.
He ran into a fire hydrant and a tree outside a friends home. He suffered cuts to his face.
Go Wanderlei
Hate to hear that too. I love Hooty and the Blowfish.
Hootie? Tiger Woods is a golf pro. Darius Rucker is Hootie.
sounds kinda hokey to me.
