SAN DIEGO (AP) -- The player who walked toward the first tee at sunrise on the North Course at Torrey Pines was not accompanied by a security detail. Maintenance workers did not gather on the pro shop balcony to watch him tee off. This was Nicholas Thompson, not Tiger Woods.
And that's why the "indefinite break" from golf that Woods announced two months ago didn't really start until Tuesday.
It has been 53 days since golf's biggest star announced he was stepping away to sort out a private life that has run amok through tabloids and gossip magazines because of his extramarital affairs.
Truth is, little has changed during his absence.
At least so far.
The U.S. PGA Tour is only three weeks into its new season, three events that Woods usually doesn't play. Besides, not as many Americans watch golf during those weeks, from behind the ropes or on the sofa. Not when the tournaments are played on two islands in the Pacific or four courses in the California desert. Not when they are held the same weekend as the NFL playoffs.
Torrey Pines, however, is different.
It's the first tournament on U.S. network television. It's where Woods and his chief rival, Phil Mickelson, typically start their seasons.
How much will the tour miss Woods? Now is the time to start keeping score.
This is a big week for Tom Wilson, the tournament director of what now is called the Farmers Insurance Open. This might be the only U.S. PGA Tour event in history that had four names in the span of one year -- the Buick Invitational, the Century Club of San Diego Invitational, the San Diego Open and the Farmers Insurance Open.
General Motors filed for bankruptcy, knocking out Buick as the title sponsor. The tournament found a replacement only last week, and Wilson is optimistic that Farmers will be interested in signing on for more than just this year.
It would have helped to have Woods around this week, bringing the energy and crowds that once accompanied him.
Woods has missed this tournament only once when healthy, in 1997 when he was playing for appearance money overseas and won the Asian Honda Classic by 10 shots. He had to skip last year while recovering from knee surgery, although he still managed to steal some headlines by announcing hours after the final round that his wife had given birth to their son, Charlie.
Torrey Pines has become the tour's signature stop on the West Coast Swing, awarded the prime spot on the calendar between the NFL's conference championship games and the Super Bowl. It's no surprise that its TV ratings have dwarfed every other tournament on the West Coast, helped in part by Woods winning five of the last six times he played.
"Any time he's not in the field, it's obviously not the best field we have. You always want your best guy."
-- Rocco Mediate The difference now, of course, is not only what's keeping him away but the uncertainty of when he will return.
By now, players have accepted that Woods is on leave and that his personal life is a wreck. There really is nothing else to say beyond the daily dose of gossip. What really happened that night he drove his SUV over a fire hydrant and into a tree? Is he really at a sex addiction clinic in Mississippi? Did his wife participate in the program? Does their marriage have a chance?
The bigger question, which no one can answer, is when he will return.
Rocco Mediate is back at Torrey Pines for the first time since that 19-hole playoff loss to Woods in the 2008 U.S. Open. Mediate missed last year with a knee injury, which largely went unnoticed. He went to the putting green on Monday and told his caddie, "A little different here." Missing were thousands of fans surrounding the practice range on the North Course.
Missing was his adversary that day, Woods.
"Yeah, that's really different," Mediate said. "Any time he's not in the field, it's obviously not the best field we have. You always want your best guy. It always makes it what it's supposed to be, especially [since] he's won here 712 times. So it's hard to beat that guy here."
His absence will continue to capture attention if he's not at the Match Play Championship (where he returned a year ago) or another World Golf Championship at Doral the second week of March, or at Bay Hill for the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Nick Watney was reminded of his victory last year, when hours after he left Torrey Pines with the trophy, word leaked that Woods had become a father again. So if Watney were to win again, could history repeat itself with another announcement from Woods? And what would the announcement be?
Watney laughed at the possibility.
"I hope it would be that he's coming back," Watney said. "Because we need him."

Comments (Page 1 of 1)
I don't know about others, but I'm really excited about watching "Lefty" playing and picking up where he left off the last two months of last season! He literally kicked Tiger's ass all over the golf course. Anybody that denies that fact, is living in a dream world! If Phil still has the tee's figured...along with the rest of his short game( possibly the best wedge player on tour), he'll dominate this year!
Hey Grandpa!..."Blastout"....is that the name of the day?.....you're such a liar...."I don't think I will ever look at Tiger the same way again", you have never looked at Tiger with anything but hate and contempt!....don't be such a hypocrite. "Phil kicking Tiger's ass for two months"....do you know how hilariously stupid that sounds?.....keep me laughing old man.
Het Blastout, phil is a great player and his game has improved a little more, however, if you think Phil can consistently out play Tiger then you in a fantasy world. when Tiger comes back he will be all the more determined to win as much respect back from fans as possible, and to to do that he will have to win. Tiger will use this setback as motivation and will be more focused than ever through all the hecklers and naysayers, so Phil better get what he can while he.
He will succeed only if Tiger is not around. Phil is not or will ever be the ?Golfer that Tiger is.
Unfortunately even with the past events re Tiger and our opinion of him hitting rock bottem, he is needed on the golf course, without him it is just not the same.
I am sure he knows that which makes him even more of jerk.
I still don't buy the sex addict bit, I think he did what he did because he could.
With all of the above being stated, I would still like to see him play golf, that is the one thing re Tiger that I can still appreciate.
I can appreciate that comment "Tricia." I feel that way about Lefty...I just don't have to deal with the fact that he is a sociopathic philanderer. I don't think I will ever look at Tiger the same way again.
Hey tricia, wether an addict or not we all do the things we do because we can. And sure Tiger was foolish, but do we continue to dog him or do we support his efforts to be a better person. After all, if his beautiful wife Elin can work with him through this mess can't we move out from under the underlying bitterness to a man who really did nothing to us.
jwcisler.....did you feel the same way about Michael Jordan and his sleeping around on his ex? How about Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant, Shaq, etc. etc, etc? It didn't hurt their image a bit. People want to see Tiger get back on the golf course. His private life isn't any of my business. But like most people, I love to see him on the golf course. The PGA is just plain boring without him. Phil is a great golfer, but just doesn't bring the crowds in. This is the 2nd PGA event and ratings are at rock bottom.
I love the fact that you folks will never look at Tiger the same, like who really cares, as if your life is so perfect.
I hope Tiger NEVER RETURNS. THE PGA DID NOT DESERVE HIM THEN AND THEY DON'T NOW. HE IS NOT A SLAVE. GO FIND YOUR NEW HORSE TO RIDE ON. SELFISH BUUNCH OF PEOPLE.
Hey sandar, don't get crazy, I want Tiger back on the course to continue his legacy. Besides, these same haters would gladly have him over for dinner and brag to their friends then hate him again because they can.
Doubt it Dannyboy.
correction, tigger is a slave
Hey Krump! How the heck are you?! I knew you couldn't let negative comments about the philanderer go without one of your enlightening comments...as I fall off the chair laughing. :o)
Dannyboy, point well taken.
I am getting the impression by some comments that people think that I am not a Tiger Woods fan, quite to the contrary, I have always been a Tiger fan and would love to see him back on the PGA tour.
Golf is definitely not the same without him.
I have been as upset as anyone of what has transpired in the last while.
I just feel that when one is in the spotlight they have to accept the good with the bad and when they create a situation whether they like it or not they owe there fans some sort of explanation or apology, not one scripted and broadcast by the media as was done on the onstart of this situation.
I have always felt that trust is a very important part of any relationship so maybe I sound a little harsh but that does not mean that I can not appreciate Tiger on the golf course, it also does not mean that I am not a fan, I am just very disappointed in his actions.
When Tiger returns; which he will I'd like to see everyone at the first tee box turn their backs as he steps up to hit his first shot. I've los all respect for him, and yes he is the best golfer I've ever seen tee it up, but golf is a game of respet and intergrity; which he has demonstrated he has none of. When Phil walked off the 18th green at Bethpage in '02 he stayed and interacted with the fans, putting his name on hats, shirts and whatever the fans handed him. Tiger walked off the 18th green and did not stop or greet anyone outside the ropes. It's the difference between a man who is humble and understands the gift he has and one who is self centered and all about Tiger. So I say let's turn our backs on him like he did the game of golf and oh by the way is family. He does not deserve our respect.
