A day ago, it appeared that Woods was at the top of his game and poised to firmly establish himself as the greatest golfer ever. Now he has a long rehabilitation process ahead of him.

The big question facing Woods now: If he re-aggravated the knee injury playing 91 holes in five days, was winning the U.S. Open worth it?

He used the "chinaman" slur while describing Liang's round and explaining that he will not make the cut.

There is no word yet on whether Clampett will be disciplined by CBS. Clampett's slur comes three months after Golf Channel announcer Kelly Tilghman was suspended for two weeks for saying that if young players want to beat Tiger Woods, they should "lynch him in a back alley."

There has also so far been no reaction from Augusta National, which is far from the world's most politically correct organization but which is known for its insistence that television announcers not say anything controversial. CBS announcer Jim Nantz frequently talks about how much classier golf in general and Augusta National in particular are than other sports and other venues, and Nantz has even criticized Woods for cursing on the course. How does he feel about one of his colleagues using a slur?

UPDATE: Bobby Clampett on 'Chinaman': If I Offended Anybody Please Accept My Sincere Apologies
CBS's Bobby Clampett Apologizes for Calling Liang Wen-Chong 'Chinaman' at Masters originally appeared on Golf FanHouse on Fri, 11 Apr 2008 19:25:00 EST . This year, Zach Johnson was planning to have Ruth Chris Steakhouse serve up some Iowa beef, to honor his roots, and in a nod to his wife, Amelia Island shrimp. Augusta National offered a polite "hell no" on the idea and reminded Johnson that he'd have to use the chefs on staff.
So it was back to the drawing board, and the menu remains a work in progress with only a couple of weeks before his mid-March deadline. Surf and turf is about as concrete as it gets so far.

"We're trying to piece some things together and see how that works out," Johnson said... "I have a feeling it's going to be some Midwest food with some Florida flair."
Sounds good. Just stay away from the chicken and collard greens. It really bums out the segregationists who will be in attendance.

After the jump, 20 years worth of Champions Dinner menus.

* joke
Phil Mickelson, 2007: Barbecued ribs, chicken, sausage and pulled pork, with cole slaw.

Tiger Woods, 2006: Stuffed jalapeno and quesadilla appetizers with salsa and guacamole; green salad; steak fajitas, chicken fajitas, Mexican rice, refried beans; apple pie and ice cream for dessert.

Phil Mickelson, 2005: Lobster ravioli in tomato cream sauce, Caesar's salad, garlic bread.

Mike Weir, 2004: Elk, wild boar, Arctic char (that's a fish), Canadian beer.

Tiger Woods, 2002: Porterhouse steak and chicken with a sushi appetizer.

Vijay Singh, 2001: Seafood tom kah, chicken panang curry, baked sea scallops with garlic sauce, rack of lamb with yellow kari sauce, baked filet Chilean sea bass with three flavor chili sauce, lychee sorbet.

Mark O'Meara, 1999: Chicken fajitas, steak fajitas, sushi, tuna sashimi.

Tiger Woods, 1998: Cheeseburgers, chicken sandwiches, french fries, milkshakes.

Nick Faldo, 1997: Fish and chips, tomato soup.

Ben Crenshaw, 1996: Texas barbecue.

Jose Maria Olazabal, 1995: Paella (a Spanish rice dish) and hake (whitefish), plus tapas.

Bernhard Langer, 1994: Turkey and dressing, black forest torte.

Fred Couples, 1993: Chicken cacciatore.

Sandy Lyle, 1989: Haggis, mashed potatoes, mashed turnips.

Bernhard Langer, 1986: Weiner schnitzel (breaded veal).
A couple of thoughts: Fuzzy Zoeller made his jaw-droppingly offensive comments even though Woods served cheeseburgers, chicken sandwiches, french fries and milkshakes. In a move that left players shaking their heads, Sabbatini withdrew from the final round of the Target World Challenge on Sunday because of "personal reasons," making him the first player in the nine-year history of the event to leave early.
The Target World Challenge is Tiger's silly-season tournament. (Tiger won the event yesterday and will donate the $1.35 first-place check to the Tiger Woods Foundation.) And even though Sabbatini bonked out early, he still got $170,000 for his troubles. He was in last place heading into the final round, only 28 shots behind Woods. Hey, it's just like a regular tour stop!

According to the AP, a clubhouse attendant said "Sabbatini cleaned out his locker Saturday afternoon ... He told them he was headed to Maui, where he spends his Christmas vacation." Well, I suppose that counts as "personal reasons," although Sabbatini's agent said his client suffered from shin splints. I wonder if "shin splints" is a euphemism for "getting his ass kicked." I'm going with yes.

This certainly won't improve Sabbatini's standing with fans, players and especially Mr. Woods. I think Fred Couples summed it up nicely: "They don't have any flights to Hawaii [on Sunday night]?" Couples said, shaking his head. "He's messing with the wrong guy."

True that.
Rory Sabbatini Is Getting on Tiger's Last Nerve originally appeared on Golf FanHouse on Mon, 17 Dec 2007 19:00:00 EST . But whether the news that Tiger Woods has signed a licensing deal with Gatorade that could be worth $100 million gets the dollar figure exactly right or not, Darren Rovell explains at his sports business blog that this is a huge deal.

Rovell says Gatorade usually pays no more than $1 million a year to the athletes who endorse it, but that the arrangement with Woods is actually a licensing arrangement, not an endorsement. What's the difference? It means that Woods will get a percentage of the sales of the Gatorade Tiger Woods Thirst Quencher, the new drink that the company will launch in March.

Deals like this are rare -- the only other one I can think of is the George Foreman Grill, which earned Foreman somewhere in the neighborhood of $150 million. But with the way so many weekend golfers want to imitate everything Tiger does, I could see this drink becoming incredibly popular and generating nine-figure paydays for both Woods and Gatorade.
Tiger Woods, Gatorade: $100 Million Deal originally appeared on Golf FanHouse on Wed, 17 Oct 2007 08:33:00 EST . It goes deep into one issue and then bounces around to a plethora of smaller ones ... and does it all in a way that will make you feel like the prettiest girl at the cotillion. Bookmark this page, and visit daily.

Of the 30 players invited to this week's Tour Championship, five are still mathematically alive in the race for the FedEx Cup. To me, that's one of the flaws in the system ... I'd like to see more players with a chance to jump up and grab the thing by the throat on the final day.

Rory Sabbatini also thinks it's a flaw in the system ... but he'd like to see the number of players still alive for the Cup shrunk, not expanded. He thinks that players who didn't play all four events should be ineliglible to win.

And incidentally, under the grand vision of Rory, the sudden hero of the sanctity of the FedEx Cup, he would be one of the three players still alive, while Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods, the two best golfers in the world, would be the ones kicked out.

"The way I see it, if you don't play all four events, you shouldn't be eligible," said Sabbatini.

"If they played one event for the playoffs in the NBA or baseball or football, you play one [game] and if you decide, OK, I'm going to skip this week, that's a forfeit," he said. "That's the way I see it."
In other words:

"Waaaah! Tiger's too good! Tiger can win the FedEx Cup when he's not trying as hard as I am! Waaaaaah! Tiger makes me feel like an ugly little girl with a unibrow! Waaaah! I want Tiger to hold my hand and take me to get ice cream and tell me I'm a pretty little princess, but he won't, because he's mean! Waaaah!"

I think maybe it's time that Rory Sabbatini stopped talking out loud.

(Also at the bottom: ... I do not feel good about Stephon Marbury or the New York Knicks right now ... the ladies love Najeh Davenport ... and I didn't know this, but Andrew Walter is still alive ... )

In fairness ... maybe I'd feel the same way if I was in a competition where I thought I was pretty good, but there was someone way better than me, and he could beat me by putting forth only 75% of my effort. Maybe I'd feel that way ... if I also felt like being a giant skirtbag.

Let's expand on Rory's example of the NBA playoffs as an example. If the San Antonio Spurs wanted to take a week of the NBA Finals off, and just forfeit two or three games to the Cavaliers, either by not showing up at all, or by letting Beno Udrich guard LeBron James for 48 minutes a night during those games ... they could have done it. And they'd still hold the Larry O'Brien trophy today, much like Tiger Woods will hold the FedEx Cup on Sunday.

Now, the Cavs might not have liked being toyed with like that ... they might have felt humiliated by the fact that someone else could put in only a fraction of their effort and still beat them ... but I'm afraid that's just the way it goes. Sometimes (ahem, Rory), you're just not that good.

But there is some positive news for Sabbatini ... if he doesn't want Tiger or Phil to win, he's in a position to do something about it. He's one of the five with a mathematical shot to take home the Cup, along with Steve Stricker, K.J. Choi, Tiger and Phil.

Really, I don't know what Sabbatini's in a position to complain about. I'm sure he thinks he still has a chance to win this week because he's a great, great, golfer ... but the fact is that he has a chance to win this week because Tiger took a week off. Tiger did him a favor. He should be down on his knees for Tiger.

If Tiger hadn't opted to spend a week with his newborn daughter (selfish jerk that he is), he'd probably have the trophy and the $10 million locked up already, and could spend this week playing with left-handed women's clubs and using Sabbatini's left testicle as his golf ball (a Nike logo scribbled on it with a Sharpie, of course), and he'd still take the trophy home.

It actually works out wonderfully for Sabbatini. I'm glad he's alive (at least, mathematically, in the chase for the FedEx Cup). Imagine on Sunday, a final-round pairing of Rory Sabbatini and Tiger Woods, coming down to the wire, with those two being the only ones in contention ... that would actually hold some interest for me, even against an NFL game on Sunday.

In fact, there are a lot of scenarios that could hold some interest for me. I was highly skeptical when the thing started, but looking back ... what's been so bad about this whole deal? If our biggest gripe is that Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and Ernie Els each took one tournament off out of four, then we're doing OK here.

That seems like a small sacrifice to make for golf fans, in return for getting 4 weeks of golf where the overwhelming majority of the best golfers in the world are still playing. The alternatives are no golf at all, or golf tournaments where the best player in the field is Briny Baird.

One FedEx Cup tournament gave us a Tiger and Phil Sunday showdown, another tournament gave us a classic Tiger win with an unbelievable final round ... and thanks to Rory Sabbatini, this last tournament could give us a chance to Sabbatini again publicly flogged and humiliated. Where's the downside?

I was wrong ... this FedEx Cup business has worked, at least marginally well. And this is in Year 1, where everyone, event organizers included, conceded that they'd need to tweak some things. Eventually, this thing is going to grow into the most prestigious title a golfer can obtain, outside of one of the four majors.

I could potentially see myself looking briefly away from an NFL game to see Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson going at it again at the Tour Championship ... and I could see myself doing the same if I thought I could catch Rory Sabbatini crying as Tiger Woods strips him of all dignity and masculinity once again.

Of course, if that Sabbatini/Woods showdown were to materialize, it would mean that Tiger's already won the FedEx Cup ... in order for Rory to win it, he has to win the tournament, and Tiger has to finish worse than 12th in a 30-man field, which just isn't going to happen.

But I'm sure that Rory would take great pride in winning the actual tournament against Tiger ... you know, theoretically, if there was a chance that that could actually happen.

It appears that some people are very disappointed in Andruw Jones.

I mean, I hope justice is served, and I'm glad that the woman's having her day in court ... but I could have done without the reminder that the culture in sports can be so ... disgusting.

Stephon Marbury took the stand yesterday, and admitted he called Browne-Sanders a "bitch," and also that he had sex with a Knicks intern who was working under Browne-Sanders ... and that's not what bothers me.

What bothers me is that Marbury can admit that he did those things ... and that he still considers the whole lawsuit a joke. That means Marbury not only sees nothing wrong with what he did, he finds it completely laughable that anyone else might object, either.

I guess it's not a surprise ... that an extremely sexist culture exists in a professional sports organization is not exactly earth-shattering news. It's just that when the occasional reminder comes about, like this one, I feel dirty for rooting for these people.

The trial is just getting started, and Isiah Thomas still has a chance to defend himself from the bizarre allegations made against him, too ... and obviously, I'm not declaring guilt or innocence here. But at the very least, it sounds like Madison Square Garden was a miserable place for a woman to work.

No matter what else is proven or disproven here, clearly there was a culture where it was seen as perfectly normal and okay for male employees to refer to female employees as "bitches," and where female interns were in a position where they felt like they "had" to accept the sexual advances of star players.

Maybe it's a good thing this is happening ... maybe it'll help to shine a light on the sexist culture that exists within the Knicks organization (and I'm pretty sure they aren't alone in that) and can be a starting point towards helping eliminate it.

Maybe that'll be what comes of this ... but I doubt it.

I was trying to figure out why ... and here's the one common link I could come up with: Najeh Davenport.

Davenport, pictured to the right fighting off some bush, as he is often forced to do, has played in only two NFL cities ... Pittsburgh and Green Bay. He has to be the link here. Why the women love Najeh ... I don't know. He isn't very good-looking, he's never been tremendously productive ... the only thing he's known for is the excretion of his bodily waste into your laundry. I guess that works with the ladies these days.

I feel so out of touch ... I still send flowers. Have a gander at the women pictured in this MSNBC article ... and yeah, they look more like carryovers from the 70's than gals who jumped on the Ben Roethlisberger bandwagon. Probably a difficult play ... but that doesn't mean he didn't look a little goofy out there.

Anyway, the Red Sox are going to take a 5-game lead into their series with the Yankees, which starts on Friday ... the pitching matchups are as follows, and they are not shabby:

Game 1: Andy Pettitte vs. Daisuke Matsuzaka.
Game 2: Chien Ming Wang vs. Josh Beckett.
Game 3: Roger Clemens vs. Curt Schilling.

Andrew Walter. I had forgotten that this guy existed, what with the drafting of JaMarcus Russell, the signing of Daunte Culpepper, and the Week 1 play of Josh McCown. And then I saw this quote today from Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin:

"I have great confidence in all our quarterbacks, especially the first two in Josh and Daunte."
And I wondered who the poor bastard 3rd QB was ... I looked, and yes, it's still Andrew Walter. That's gotta make him feel good, to see that quote in the newspaper.

Of course, it probably doesn't make him feel worse than the fact that he has about two weeks left to enjoy life as an NFL player. The Raiders, since they just signed Russell, have two weeks before they officially have to put him on the roster. Once they do, I imagine there won't be much use for Andrew Walter anymore.

And that probably means we've seen him play his last NFL down ... I guess if there's someone willing to trade for Charlie Frye, there's hope for anyone, but given Walter's play last year with the Raiders ... I don't feel like I'm exaggerating when I say that it's the worst I've ever seen a quarterback play, and not then not be benched immediately. He held that starting job for a long time.

He finished '06 with 3 touchdowns and 13 interceptions ... but hey, on the plus side, he made 4 tackles. That's over a 30% tackle rate on plays where he was picked off. I admire that.

I guess I just wanted to bid him a fond farewell. Thanks for the memories.

Deserving Of Your Full Attention ...

7:30, ESPN. (Woods was in the process of beating Sabbatini at the time.)

But today the Akron Beacon Journal reports that Sabbatini doesn't hold himself to the same high standards that he holds the fans in Northeastern Ohio to:

Sabbatini's reaction was particularly inappropriate given his own lack of decorum. The sheriff's grandson was among those who heard multiple Sabbatini F-words when Woods chipped in on the ninth hole to essentially seal the win.

So, just to make clear, Rory Sabbatini thinks it's perfectly OK to use the most vulgar word in the English language in front of young fans, but if a fan casually asks Sabbatini whether he has changed his opinion of Tiger Woods, Sabbatini thinks that fan needs to be forcibly removed from the course. Why does the PGA Tour allow this jerk to treat the fans like that?%Gallery-4274%
Rory Sabbatini: OK for Me to Drop F-Bombs, Not OK for You to Ask Me a Question originally appeared on Golf FanHouse on Tue, 07 Aug 2007 07:48:00 EST . Golf claps all around, right? Well, not quite. Some fans are put off by the 24-year-old showing off her <strike>smokin' hot body</strike> stunning good looks in men's magazines, on her Golf Channel reality show, or, hell, during tour events.

On the one hand, I can understand the "she's not a good role model for a the little miss junior golfers out there!!" argument. Fair enough. But 12 year-olds probably shouldn't be subscribing to FHM. Just a thought. But whatever, this isn't about me. Yesterday, The Golf Channel "experts" addressed this question on the webtubes: "On a scale of 1-10, how important was Natalie Gulbis' win to the LPGA Tour?" In the spirit of blogger pithiness, I'll just regurgitate the best answer:

Mercer Baggs: "This gives the LPGA even more reason to promote their tour through one of the most visible, attractive and likable players they have. I think a 10 would be having Michelle Wie win and commit herself to playing the tour full time. Love her or loathe her, no one at the moment drives more traffic the LPGA's way than does Wie. "

Yeah, I had no idea who Mercer Baggs was either, but he makes a great point: Like it or not, sexiness is, well, sexy. And from a marketing standpoint, a sexy, charismatic winner is even better than a frumpy, boring one. I'm not sure the LPGA was struggling to stay relevant -- their hardcore fans aren't going anywhere -- but maybe expanding the fan base was slow-going. And if the goal is to make more money, then Gulbis' win is big.

If you don't think so, just take a look at all the comments from some really happy male readers. Didn't get that when Nicole Castrale won her first tournament (maybe the venue had something to do with it...) And as Baggs writes, when (if?) Michelle Wie starts winning, it'll be just like when the Beatles came to the U.S. But without the bowl cuts, British accents, and Ed Sullivan. The screaming girls stay, though.

Hat tip: The Golf Blog
How Important Was Natalie Gulbis' Win to the LPGA Tour? originally appeared on Golf FanHouse on Thu, 02 Aug 2007 22:17:00 EST . Player ripped the lid off it yesterday, saying that he had knowledge that at least one PGA Tour professional has, as Gary Sheffield would put it, stuck some steroids in his butt.

"I took an oath prior to him telling me -- I won't tell you where -- but he told me what he did, and I could see this massive change in him," Player said. "And somebody else told me something, that I also promised I wouldn't tell, that verified others had done it."

"I might be way out [on the guess of 10 players using steroids]," Player said. "Definitely not going to be lower, but might be a hell of a lot more."
But Tiger Woods, Nick Faldo, and Phil Mickelson don't believe that there's anyone in golf using steroids, and they all dismissed Player much as you would dismiss a drunk old man lying on the sidewalk with a battle of Mad Dog 20/20 in his coat if he told you that the "Walk/Don't Walk" sign on the corner just flashed the message "BRUCE VILANCH IS JESUS."

I, however, see no reason to dismiss the steroid accusations that quickly. Even though there's absolutely no one on tour that looks like they've ever even seen a performance enhancing drug (except for Tiger, but he was this good back when he was scrawny), I think it would be more fun to believe that there's a rampant steroid problem in golf.

So that's what I'm going to do. I've taken the liberty of identifying the guys who I believe to be the most obvious offenders.

(Also at the bottom: A little bit of gender confusion in the swimming pool, Julio Franco gets another job, Yao Ming is not making the People's Republic happy, a review of episode two of The Bronx is Burning, and Stephon Marbury might be losing it ... but he might also be awesome)

Before we begin, though ... I suppose I should state up front that this is all a joke, and I don't believe that any of these men have ever used steroids. I really hate doing that, but it feels necessary.

1. Brad Faxon.

I've been onto this guy for for years. Look at that picture there ... it was taken two years ago at the British Open, and it shows Faxon either frolicking playfully at the Old Course at St. Andrews, or leaping over the burn in a mad dash to his golf ball, which he then ate in a rage because it didn't go in the hole. You can almost see the crazed rage dripping off of him.

And look at that leaping ability. Clean golfers don't have the kind of vertical. You might look at that and see a thin, frail man jumping over a creek, but the form he displays there reminds me of the old Lawrence Taylor, in his prime, leaping to crush a helpless quarterback. Brad Faxon is a vicious animal, and needs to be stopped.

2. Steve Williams.

He's not an actual golfer, but really, would it shock you to learn that this guy's been juicing? Tiger's Caddy has to be one of the more likely candidates here ... for one thing, he's a pretty big cat, and he's also got quite the temper.

If you so much as sniffle in Tiger's backswing, Williams will pull a 7-iron out of Tiger's bag, and he will jam it into a bodily orifice of yours, and frankly, he doesn't care which one.

There was the time when a spectator took a picture of Tiger in his backswing, and Stevie went over, yanked the camera from the guy's hands, and tossed it in a pond (this is actually true). Frankly, I hope he is on steroids, just so he'd have an excuse for being that much of a jerk.

He's constantly snapping at people ... you may choose to blame this on the massive throng of uncouth spectators that always surrounds Tiger, but I'm blaming 'roid rage.

3. Chi Chi Rodriguez.

That playful sword thing he did with his putter ... playful gesturing, or ATTEMPTED MURDER?

He was a contemporary of Player's, and the two spent a lot of time together. If anyone would confide in Player that he used steroids, it would've been Chi Chi. Then there were the warlike tendencies with his putter, pretending it was a sword after he made a putt ... as aggressive and violent an act as has ever taken place on a golf course.

Of course, he was also 5'7", 130 pounds, and one of the nicest and gentlest men to ever walk the planet. So I could go either way here.

5. John Daly.

Two things point to Daly using steroids. One, he hit the ball a hell of a long way. And two, he clearly has no regard for his body or his health, and will gladly ingest anything you put in front of him ... be it a bottle of Jack Daniels, Hooters wings, more Jack Daniels, a syringe full of stanozolol, or the rest of the Jack Daniels.

Of course, the counterargument here is that if John Daly cared enough about golf to use steroids, he might also have cared enough to keep himself sober, marry a sane woman, or, you know ... practice golf every now and then.

4. Craig Parry.

Guy has forearms like Popeye.

6. Ernie Els.

Some of my suspicion here is based on Els' size. For a golfer, he's gargantuan, going about 6'3", 220. You'd figure a guy that big growing up in South Africa would get into rugby.

But I have a theory about Els ... I believe that in 1988, he was kicked out of the South African Rubgy Union for forcefully removing and then eating an opposing player's pancreas.

He had previously been lightly reprimanded for ripping off seven other players' ears, but in rugby, ear removal is not a punishable foul. He was suspended for two games in '87 for actually scalping an opponent, but didn't get kicked out until the pancreas incident in '88. All incidents were blamed on steroid-induced rage. He then took up golf.

And he's since gotten off the steroids, giving way to the calm, placid demeanor you see today.

7. Tiger Woods.

Hey, you saw the US Open. Now, I do believe that Tiger works harder in the gym than anyone else on tour, and I think he's made it his business to be the strongest, fittest, and most in-shape player on the planet. But at the same time ... his body has made a recent Barry Bonds-like transformation.

I think some people were actually serious about this after the US Open. Mike Greenberg kind of said it, but wouldn't say it, on ESPN Radio. My brother was sure of it. I heard a few other people mention the possibility. And hey, you couldn't deny that Tiger was looked pretty jacked. Pretty un-golfer-ly.

And while I don't seriously believe that Tiger would ever consider using steroids ... stop and imagine for a second how big of a scandal that would be. It would make the Barry Bonds hoopla look like a run-of-the-mill Zach Randolph weed arrest.

With the amount of trust and love the public has put into Tiger (he is, after all, the odds-on favorite in Who's Now) ... if Tiger using steroids was ever even hinted at, that news would, to borrow a phrase from Chris Rock, blow up like The Godfather.

So that's what I'm hoping for this weekend at the British Open. A dominating win by Tiger Woods, and a syringe to fall out of his golf bag on his way up the 18th fairway.

There seems to be a great deal of gender confusion with this Getty photograph. Here's the caption that comes with it:

Rio de Janeiro, BRAZIL: Brazilian swimmer Rebeca Gusmao celebrates his record in the women 50m freestyle competition 18 July 2007 during the Pan American games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Gusmao clocked 25.05s.
"... his record in the women 50m freestyle ..."

Listen, that might not be a typo. That might be exactly what happened here.

I'm honestly confused about the sex of this individual. On one hand, suggesting female: the name "Rebeca," the women 50m freestyle, and some facial features, particularly the mouth, albeit judging from a poor angle, look to be feminine.

On the other hand, suggesting male: "his record," and every other single thing about the photo. It sort of did the opposite ... the good things got better, and the bad things just got worse.

Here's a list of the good things:

John Turturro.

And here's a list of the bad things:

Oliver Platt as George Steinbrenner is as one-dimensional as the Miss Elizabeth poster I had hanging on my wall in 1990 ... and way less enjoyable.

The problem is more the writing than the portrayal ... Steinbrenner's a bombastic, blowhard, temperamental, manipulator. I get it. But that's all I get.

There are no subtleties about the character, there's nothing sympathetic or relatable about the man ... there's nothing to make someone think that the character, to this point, has even required any great amount of acting skill.

The Son of Sam murder and the mayoral race scenes are, quite unfortunately, still around ... I had to fight the urge to fast forward through them. By episode four, I'm guessing that I won't be able to resist that urge any longer, and I'll cut these things down to sitcom length.

The show tries to make you care about how Thurman Munson hates Reggie Jackson, and as soon as you start to ... hey, let's watch a quick murder and then see what's on Mario Cuomo's mind.

It's freaking maddening. It's like if The Natural stopped every 10 minutes to give you an update on the Works Progress Administration. They could have done it ... but why?

One night a week, you've got 44 minutes to make me care about Billy Martin, George Steinbrenner, Thurman Munson, Reggie Jackson, the Son of Sam, a few murder victims, three mayoral candidates, and Kevin Arnold's dad. That's about 4.4 minutes each, tops. Good luck gripping me.

Two episodes in, it just feels like too ambitious a project, by people not quite skilled enough to pull it off. Ultimately, it's an 8-week miniseries with one good actor, produced by a network that isn't yet very good at producing this kind of thing. So far, it's no better than your average Lifetime movie starring Meredith Baxter-Birney.

I'm sorry you have to be a part of this, John Turturro.

In fact, Vick's signature shoe, the Nike Zoom Vick V, is scheduled to be released in stores on Aug. 23 for a suggested retail price of $100. Though Nike spokesman Brian Facchini declined to comment on the Vick charges -- he chose to read a statement that said, "We are aware of the indictment and are reviewing the information and have no further information at this time" -- he did confirm that the Vick shoe is still scheduled to be released.
Innocent until proven guilty and all, but ... I dunno, at this point, the evidence seems pretty damning. Pacman Jones hasn't been convicted for anything that happened on that rainy night in Vegas, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea for General Mills to call him up and say, "Hey, we'd like to launch a national cereal called Pacman-O's. Whaddaya say?"

I'm not saying let's put him in jail right now, but if I'm a Nike executive, I'm saying, "Aren't there non-dog-murdering quarterbacks out there who we could get to push our shoes?"

You can go read about how much he loves Italy, how he's going to play there when he retires, blah blah blah ... it's all a little wacky. But it is passionate, and I respect that. He won't be a Michael Jordan ... lifeless, bland, corporate, and greedy off-the-court. That way the "Starbury Movement" can start touching the rest of the world even sooner. After all, poor Italian youth are notorious for using basketball shoes as status symbols. They're just begging for a 10 Euro basketball shoe, so they don't have to shell out for the expensive Gucci ones.

While you're over there, maybe the Pope will finally make you a Saint.

Arrivederci Looney Tunes.
I'm also joining the islesfan movement..

For several reasons, frankly:

1) The role he played in the repeal of prohibition
2) He was just signed by the Atlanta Braves.

They didn't sign him as a mascot, or as a Crash Davis-type wise old man in the clubhouse, either. They're actually going to use his rickety old bones. And why not? The Braves used a pitcher and a pinch-hitter in extra innings the other night against Cincinnati ... I don't mean to disrespect the hitting prowess of Kyle Davies, but that's probably not good.

"Julio knows his role, and he's going to get a lot action here," third baseman Chipper Jones said. "He'll be first or second off the bench and start quite a bit. He wasn't getting used a lot up there. He's going to get used a lot here."
And that, in a nutshell, is why I like the Mets to hold on to their lead in the NL East.

Yao Ming. Yao is so selfish. Here, I'll let the Chinese government explain, as I'm sure they will do in a reasonable, level-headed, and completely fair fashion.

"No matter how lofty public welfare activities are, they can't be allowed to take first place in a player's life,'' the China Sports Daily, a federation-owned newspaper, said in an article appearing Tuesday.

"No matter how sweet personal life is, it can't be compared to the exultation of capturing glory for one's nation,'' the article said.
Yao was busy selfishly planning his wedding, and making appearances promoting the 2008 Beijing Games, and volunteering his time at the Special Olympics.

The official view of the Chinese government appears to be, "Your wife can plan the wedding herself, in fact, that is the sort of thing that wives are for. And the Special Olympics are cute and everything, but to put it bluntly, are any of our Special Olympians helping us win the Stankovic Cup? Not unless we have any 7-footers, no.

"So get your big giraffe ass to practice."

And as mean and heartless as that seems to be, how many Americans are quick to jump on the back of Vince Carter or Shaquille O'Neal if they say they'd rather spend their summer relaxing, as opposed to playing for Team USA?

We do the same thing ... it's just not an official government-sponsored view.

Deserving Of Your Full Attention ...

9:00, ESPN2. This time she wasn't about to shoot 88, although that wasn't out of the question, either, as she was 6-over through nine holes and had just gone into the rough on her 10th when she quit.

"I just kind of woke up, and it was really sore," Wie said. "But it was OK. It held up. ... I tweaked it. And then after that it kind of went downhill. I don't remember hurting this much again."

I'm glad she took my advice, but I'd like to see Wie take a long time out from competition and only come back when she's ready. Part of being ready is having a wrist that allows her to play, but her biggest problem appears to be the mental part of the game. Her parents shouldn't let her play until they're sure she's OK in that respect.
Michelle Wie Withdraws -- Again originally appeared on Golf FanHouse on Sat, 30 Jun 2007 14:30:00 EST .
