Tiger Woods Walks on Water; John Daly Is Not Impressed

Apparently, Hank Haney wasn't screwing around when he said Tiger Woods is doing just fine. Based on this hidden video EA Sports commercial pimping Tiger Woods '09, it looks like the world's best one-legged golfer is getting around swimmingly.

You Been Blinded's HG writes that Tiger's next miracle will include resurrecting David Duval's career. (There was some discussion about helping Michelle Wie win an LPGA event but that was deemed impossible).

Pretty impressive, I suppose, but John Daly can turn water into a beer helmet, a handful of tees into a pack of smokes, and five loaves of bread and two small fish into anything on the Cracker Barrel menu. Which, I guess, is why he's known as the "drinking man's Jesus."

Michelle Wie Opens With 73, Right on the Cut Line After Thursday's Round

With all the pressure a golfer could imagine playing the Reno-Tahoe Open, the only respectable women's golfer this side of the Atlantic kept it interesting during day one.

Michelle Wie, coming in as the hot topic in golf, opened with a one-over 73 that could have been miles worse if not for a hot putter that saved the 18-year-old all day long.

Wie is eight shots back of first round leader Jeff Overton who shot a seven-under 65, but is right on the cut line after Thursday's round.

Facing criticism that would fill a spiral notebook, Wie opened with a "blame the pressure" bogey on the first hole but kept it together for most of the front nine, making two birdies on 6 and 9 to go out in even-par 36. Two bogeys on both the par-3s heading in had her slipping until a late birdie on 17 got her within a shot of both her playing competitors.

Wie hit only 39 percent of the greens in regulation, but made up for that with just 24 putts which was good enough for sixth in the field.

Maybe not exactly what she was looking for, but the good thing is she didn't shoot herself out of the tournament the first day and has a chance Friday, barring a solid round under par, to make her first cut on the PGA Tour.

It might not be the consolation prize she was hoping for, but Wie beat both Jay Williamson and David Duval, each making comments earlier this week about how they didn't really see why she was in the field.

Eat your hearts out whoever you are and dude that won a British Open like 40 years ago.

Who Finishes Higher This Week, Duval or Wie?

It might not be Rocco Mediate versus Tiger Woods for a major championship, but a B-level tournament couldn't ask for much more than a washed up PGA Tour player competing against a struggling LPGA Tour player on a stage meant for men.

Thanks to Michelle Wie, the Reno-Tahoe Open is getting more attention than normal and although some lesser known golfers are calling Wie out, it's more fun to have a former major champion-turned bogey machine complaining about her inclusion in the field.

The "she should be on the Futures Tour" comment meshed with both of their careers taking a similar, unexpected dive has Golfweek raising an interesting question -- who do you have finishing higher in this week's PGA Tour event, David Duval or Wie?
Big Wiesy vs. Double D in the Battle for Career Reclamation? C'mon people. That's even better than free cans of Arnold Palmer Arizona Iced Tea and packages of those orange peanut butter crackers at the turn for eternity.

It's funny to think that only weeks ago we were close to planning golf's funeral. Now – think about this for a second – we wouldn't even notice if tigerwoods.com was updated with information like how many times Sam Alexis has tried to sign her name in Crayon on daddy's cast.

In Shocking Turn of Events, John Daly, One-Armed Golfer, Misses Cut in Russia

Yesterday, I brought you the heart-warming tale of John Daly, the one-armed golfer who had overcome physical limitations and personal demons to play in the Russian Open. After a rocky go of it at last week's British Open, Daly shot a respectable opening round 70 in Moscow.

But the feel-good story lasted less than 24 hours. Daly, who hasn't had his PGA Tour card since 2006, shot a second-round 73 and missed the cut by one stroke.

Other than the obvious reasons, Daly shouldn't be disheartened -- the course was clearly set up to put American golfers at a disadvantage -- none of the five players in the field will play the weekend. I mean, how often can you say that Wesley Horne, Ryan Carter, Luke List, Matt Laase (amateur) AND Daly didn't make a cut? Exactly.

It's not all bad news for Daly, though. CBSSports.com's Mike Freeman ranked Daly fourth on his Top 50 Sports Jerks list, ahead of such notable names as O.J. Simpson, Don King, Kennesaw Mountain Landis, Ron Artest, Tonya Harding and Pete Rose. So there's that.

As for Daly's future in professional golf, here's to hoping he takes David Duval's advice and hones his skillz on the Futures Tour. Or, worst case, he joins the Duke golf team -- there's an opening, you know -- and if anybody screams "Duke" more than John Daly, I have yet to meet him.

David Duval Will Play Reno, Thinks Michelle Wie Would Be Better Off on Futures Tour

Greg Norman was the most improbable story during last week's British Open; the former two-time winner, now 53, led the whole thing heading into the final round, before the weather, age and Padraig Harrington's lights-out back nine all conspired against him.

Perhaps second only to Norman's unlikely showing was that of David Duval, the 2001 Open Champion and one of golf's best young players at the turn of the century who fell off the grid in recent years. He emerged at Royal Birkdale, and sandwiched rounds of 73, 69 and 71 around an ugly Saturday 83 that basically eliminated him from contention.

But Duval, who has played in 13 PGA events this season (making just two cuts), will tee it up at the Reno-Tahoe Open next week. Shockingly, he thinks Michelle Wie, playing the event on a sponsor's exemption, would be better off honing her game against women, but understands the economics of it all.
"You're in or you're not in. It's pretty simple," Duval said. "Whether I agree if she should be playing - I think she would be better off on the Futures Tour competing against women - is neither here nor there. (Tournament director) Michael Stearns thinks she can bring people in, and that's his job. If some guy needs a spot in the field, chances are he's not going to sell any tickets. She might add 2,000."

K.J. Choi Bests Norman By A Shot

Say what you want about the current leaderboard, but K.J. Choi should never surprise anyone.

A lengthy birdie putt on the 18th disappeared and suddenly Greg Norman wasn't the leader anymore. Choi's three-under 67 has him the only player in red figures at the Open Championship, one below par as he heads to the weekend.

A seven time winner on the PGA Tour, Choi was in contention at last year's British Open before finishing in a tie for 8th, his only top-10 in the Open ever.

After the round, Choi (painfully) spoke to TNT's Jim Huber.
"After number three (where i made birdie) my swing was working and I felt comfortable and confidence on every hole."
Choi continued to speak during the interview about hitting the ball in the middle of the green and just trying to keep the ball out of trouble, which was on display today with only one bogey, on the first hole.

No Asian player has ever won the Open Championship, so Choi has a chance to make history in more ways than one if he continues to hit the ball like this. Another continent with no British winners? Antarctica, surprisingly.

Still on the course is David Duval, who is two-under on his round and just two shots back of Choi. Duval is the only player in the top-20 that is still on the course, with just three holes to go, but is currently making a mess of the 16th hole.

More Fun With John Daly, Butch Harmon and What it Means to Be a Drunk

This morning, Bacon broke the news that John Daly and his beer gut are crazier than ever, and as he "prepares" for the Open Championship, he's advised Butch Harmon, his former swing coach (for all of four months), to stay the hell away.

In addition to these gems, Golf Channel's Rich Lerner also got a few choice nuggets from Daly and Harmon, the best of which are transcribed below.
Harmon: "He's a person who likes to blame other people for any of his shortcomings and I'm sorry he's like that ..."
This all stems from the PODS Championship earlier this year, when Daly had Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden on the bag for part of the first round. Big John claimed that his regular caddie was injured and he needed someone to carry his bag. Harmless enough, right. Uh, no.

Harmon dumped Daly afterward (and this didn't help, I imagine), and now, JD feels he needs to set the record straight: "
... But then the stories come out that I was drinking in the [Hooter's] tent [during the rain delay] drunk and stuff on Thursday, and it's a joke.
Two days later, after rounds of 78, 80, Daly returned to the Hooter's tent to do "charity work."
Yeah, I had a couple of beers, big deal. Signed about, you know, 1,000 autographs, it was a great day, and the next thing I know, it's more bad rumors come out."
Which led to this, and today, this.

John Daly Does Not Like Being Called 'A Drunk'

This might come as a surprise to most, but John Daly is not happy, and the problem lies with alcohol and accusations.

Back in March, swing coach Butch Harmon dumped Daly because of boozing, which would be a surprise if that word meant something completely different.
"My whole goal for him was he's got to show me golf is the most important thing in his life," Harmon said back in March. "And the most important thing in his life is getting drunk."
Well, Big John is in the field at the British Open this week, and ain't too happy with 'ol Harmon.
"[Harmon] needs to stay as far away from me as possible," Daly said Wednesday.

Asked whether his "lifestyle issues" are making it more difficult for him to get sponsors' exemptions into tournaments, Daly took aim at his former coach.

"Most of that stuff started with Butch Harmon," Daly said. "His lies sort of destroyed me for awhile. He should be a real man and get his facts straight."

Justin Rose Calls Out Kenny Perry for Skipping the British Open

There are a lot of professional golfers that some (see:me) would say have a better chance of winning the British Open this week than Justin Rose, with Kenny Perry undoubtedly being one.

The thing is, Perry isn't playing in the British, skipping out on the major championship because of a prior commitment to the Greater Milwaukee Open. His reasoning was that if he hadn't caught fire and won three of his last five events, he wouldn't have a seat in the British and would still be invited to the GMO. Hey, a commitment is a commitment, ya know? Whatever your thoughts are, Rose doesn't agree.
"He is arguably the best player in the world right now. I find it amazing he is not here." Rose told The Sun. "I couldn't personally imagine myself opting out of a Major. He even opted out of the US Open. He won around that time too."
"It is strange he is not playing in these Majors and not testing himself at the highest level."
Hey, it might not be the brawl at the Palace of Auburn Hills, but it is a little trash talking made from a pro golfer born in the host country. This subject has been bounced around a bit over the past weeks, but could it be a guy not wanting to compete in a tournament he isn't the favorite? Wouldn't you rather contend in a major than win another B-level tournament without anyone of credibility in the field? Do you just hate paying for things with coins?

Come on, even David Duval is playing in the British.

Who's In, Who's Out at the British Open

It's never too early to get major championship talk a-stirring, with the practice rounds beginning in less than two weeks at Royal Birkdale.

Two players, Shaun Micheel and some other guy I can't think of, have already withdrawn from the British Open, but the field is nearly complete with the international qualifying wrapping up, and some familiar names will be present on the links.

Davis Love III, Paul Goydos and Rich Beem were three of seven golfers to qualify yesterday at the Dearborn, Michigan site with Matt Kuchar and Alex Cejka headlining the seven qualifiers at TPC Michigan.

Goydos, runner-up to Sergio Garcia in the Players Championship after a gust of wind killed his chances in the playoff, will be making his first appearance in the British and is fairly stoked about the opportunity.
"This was my No. 1 goal for the year," he said. "If nothing else happened this year, I wanted to play in the British Open. A lot of other good things have happened on top of that, but this really has been my No. 1 goal."
Some of the less fortunate souls that missed out were Ryan Moore, Kevin Na, Bubba Watson, Jose Maria Olazabal and Darren Clarke.
